Don't Throw Food Away Challenge 2012

  • Can I join in please? Made big strides last year and really reduced our food waste thanks to MSE.

I am trying to use up what we have in the cupboard/freezer for Jan, only buying fresh fruit/veg.

My only throw-out so far for 2012 has been 1 satsuma which must have got bashed and had gone very mouldy.

However I have an unopened dish of pate bought for the relatives at Christmas which, of course, they did not touch. We don't really like pate - any ideas?

Just to complicate things we are also currently ovenless and don't have a microwave
  • It will be fine, though if you are worried, make sure you use the breadcrumbs in something that you cook before eating,.

Thanks :). I will be mixing them with parmesan to make a crunchy topping on pasta bakes.
  • My bottom of the fridge surprise was a bit grim. It've just scraped the leftovers in a freezer tub. I'm not chucking it. I just need to consider what the heck I need to do with it in order to make me want to eat it... I'm guessing mixing it with pasta, covering it in cheese and baking it.

Oh man I really need to do this, we're penniless for a couple of months so I can't afford to throw anything out.

We had a weird dinner last night due to using up leftovers - fried tattie scones (given to me by my mother which go mouldy really quickly if not eaten), leftover stuffing made into sausage shapes wrapped in the leftover streaky bacon from our New Years Day 'party', a tin of beans and a slice of fried haggis (again, donated by my mother, what's left now will go on a pizza). It felt somehow wrong having a fry up for tea and even more wrong having a slice of haggis on there too... But in the name of not wasting food...

Stick me down for £5, I don't want to set myself an unrealistic goal but I have no clue what we waste. Something tells me it's not much but I might end up giving myself a fright when I start to take note of it.

Someone put a whole bag of fresh carrots in my freezer (not me honest) Now I have defrosted them but now they are brown and blotchy and limp. Have I lost these or can they be made into soup? Thanks.

    Edited to correct the link.

Thanks squeaky - bet you thought the rest of us were going loopy! :rotfl:

You can definitely make into soup! You really won't notice when it's all whizzed up.
  • I definitely want and need to join this challenge, I have been keeping a note since the first of January, so far I have saved....
Smoked salmon, bagged up and frozen
1 1/2 limes and 1 lemon, chopped up and frozen into ice cubes for GnT's
Made fridge bottom soup and had it for lunch two days running
Made cheesy croutons from stale HM bread for soup
Open froze a bag of whoopsie Brussel sprouts
Put red and White left over cooking wine in ice cubes

But had a disaster with my home grown garlic that I tried to preserve in oil only to find out I would kill of all the family, so they went in the bin tout suite
Binned a half of potato made into wedges as a bit over done (burnt!)
And two loaves that did came out of the bread maker inedible (have now cracked the recipe!)

Not sure what cost these would mount up to but putting myself down for £5 waste food for January, obviously trying for less.

    Good luck everyone :)

Thanks for the help re using up satsumas. Unfortunately I don't like marmalade but that has reminded me that I have a jar from a neighbour in the cupboard which I will take to my mums tomorrow as she loves it.

The clementine cake sounds lovely but would involve me buys almonds and also more eggs as I only have 4. Thanks for the link though, I'll be trying that another time. So that leaves me with fresh orange juice for breakfast tomorrow morning!
