I need to cut my food bills and can't seem to stop re-stocking the cupboards (full to the brim as they are!).

I have today thrown away a teaspoon of coleslaw in the tub (usually make it but fancied a bought one the other week) - it was out of date too, but not too much of a waste.

I bought 1.5k of carrots in Tesco for 69p today and so have already chopped and frozen the majority of them (because otherwise they get forgotten in the fridge). The ones I have saved will become butternut squash soup for work (the butternut has been loitering for a while).

I also have some spuds that look a bit sad so bought some leeks today and will also make leek and tatty soup for work (might make that first actually as the carrots and butternut are ok for now).

Its definitely veg that is my main throw away item - and shouldn't be - been reading the thread for the person with food stocks but no fruit and veg and no money. I often cook too much veg and then bin some, so will try and portion it out more before I cook it.

I loved the bruchetta idea - now know what to do with the soft baby plum tomatoes in the fridge! Thanks

I have some cauli and some sad looking broccoli - any ideas other than cauli cheese - which I really don't like.

Speaking of which, I must check that portion of cheese left in the fridge....

    Do you like curry?

Cauliflower and potato make amazing curry..

Fry some onions, add curry powder (and chillies if you like), tin of tomatoes and let it simmer with chopped up cauli and cubed raw potatoes. No doubt you could stick the broccoli in too :T
  • Today used some leftover cooked spaghetti I cooked it for OH last night and he ended up having rice with my spaghetti bolognese sauce instead. I chopped the spaghetti up into short pieces, spread in a round pie tin, mixed with a Loyd Grossman pasta sauce that I would never ordinarily get round to using, added some chopped turkey bacon and topped with some slices of semi curado Spanish cheese my friend brought over from Spain, can't stand that stuff uncooked as its so bland but melted its quite nice, I then sprinkled a bit of black pepper and a tad of fajita seasoning on it and baked in the oven for 20 minutes. It was very tasty xx
  • last night used up some of the left over chicken & boiled bacon, mixed it with some fried of leeks & mushrooms made a white sauce and mixed in some cooked pasta put into a baking dish sprinkled with bread crumbs & grated cheese a lovely pasta bake dd1 has taken some to work today and I will have what's left for lunch, have still got quite a bit of chicken left which I will freeze so it dose not go to waste. Have also made HM chicken stock.

  • had to throw away three tomatoes yesterday :( they were from two bags of whoopsied ones that I had bought at the weekend and they were obviously crushed when I bought them...should have checked them straight away though and then I may have been able to salvage most of them and just cut the dodgy bits off  .... annoyed with myself but I suppose its a lesson learnt!!:o
