Thank you Firemunchkin! I may sound like I know what im doing but really don't. I am new to this being frugal malarkey and my cooking skills have much to be desired. I am very good at bargain hunting, bulk buying and stock piling... not so good at using it up!
Thanks for the tip on the fish... fish is my least favourite thing to cook as it is, let alone looking absolutely solid with freezer burn!0 -
Hi everyone
Looked through the fridge and cupboards yesterday to see what is needing used. I then did a weekly meal plan before shopping on Thursday. Definitely getting back on the straight and narrow. Very disappointing that I had to throw out a rotting cucumber today.
Never mind, things have definitely improved on the throwing away food front now I am back on thread.

Just ate a couple of once green and fresh bananas, now bruised and battered.
3 bananas. One of them had a mysterious split down the middle- so the flesh near the split was brown. I don't know how that happened, must've got crushed by some bottles in the shopping bag. The other two were bruised in places yet green near the stalk.
Chopped the manky bits off, then ate with some condensed milk- lovely. If i ate them by themselves then it would not feel good in the mouth.
On an unrelated note- Which end do you open your bananas? I open it at the stalk, everyone else in the family open it on the "monkey" end, the black dot. I'm curious to see how you open them
So that's 3 bananas saved from the food caddy.
Some old mint sauce that expired a year ago- mixed with yoghurt, made a simple and easy poppadom dip. Mint sauce preserves well anyway.
On the other hand...
I just emptied out a mayonnaise jar- about 1/5 of it. I don't think mayo goes mouldy, but it had some crumbs and particles in it which would no doubt put me off every time i go and eat it.
Scraped into caddy, recycled jar.
Not long ago, about 1/3 of a pot of yoghurt which expired on the 23rd of August! All sorts of funky stuff going on inside.
Couldn't put it in the caddy as it's a liquid, couldn't put it in the bin as it would stink and leak everywhere, so poured it in the corner of the garden and put some leaves over it, then disposed of the pot.Chuck it out... No, wait, we can fix it. No, it's useful. Aww, it's too good to throw away. Keep it as a memory. Put it to one side, I'll ebay it. No, it'll come in handy one day. No, don't throw it, if you ____, then you can use it as a _____. Don't put it in the bin, the tip has a special section for those.0 -

with things tougher than ever and watching Nigel Slater who has give me inspiration to use up what I have got in my cupboards, fridge, freezer and they are all fit to burst, but however I will try anything, there is not much that I don't like but I Live with Dh and DD1(25) dd is not to bad she will eat most things but it is my other half, He says English cooking is boring even though he is English,He will not eat fish, anything on the bone, veggi meals. As long as everything is highly spiced he will eat it. So we tend to eat what he wants to eat in steed of cooking two different meals.
However he knows we need to cut our spending due to Christmas just being around the corner so I have got to be more inventive and he is prepared to give it a go, I've just got to be a bit more inventive, so tonight is left over home made cannelloni, mixed salad with garlic crutoons.
Where I do waste money is not taking food to work so as I have a day of from work I am making a batch of soup, and cakes to take to work.
well I will keep you posted as to how it gose

well, since I have been back on this thread, I am proud to say....I have thrown absolutely NOTHING away!!:j:j:j:j
Am feeling inordinately proud of myself....I have told everyone in the house that if there are leftovers in the fridge and I catch them making other stuff rather than eating them I will probably resort to murder!!! (have builders in at the moment, so plenty of opportunity to stash them in the holes that will be walls eventually!!)
Must admit, they have all got on board (not sure if its fear or support driving them though! :rotfl:) and they are being really good with eating the weird concoctions I have put in front of them and not asking me to buy anything elseLong may it continue

Made a pudding with some very squishy pears. Peeled and cored them and put them in an ovenproof dish, filled in gaps with raspberry jam and poured a sponge mix on top and baked for about 20mins. Just had it with some custard and it was lovely :j
Would normally have chucked them in the bin so feeling quite proud:DOriginal mortgage £112,000 . Final payment due August 2027.

Love the sound of that pud I may just have to try that myself!
Today I have made a list of everything in the freezer and cupboards and i've sorted a meal plan for the rest of this week and next.
Found a few potatoes and carrots past their best so i've made a soup with a few basics from the cupboard and i shall take that to work for my lunch for the rest of the week. :money:Debt free, aim to be MF by 50 (Sept 2026)

I just toast, split and fill with what I fancy, bacon and egg, sausage and Tomarto, cold meat and salad, tuna and Mayo ,egg mayo etc. My favourite is sausage and fried onion.
Also I find they make great pizza bases, just top again with what you fanch add a bit of grated cheese and grill.Slimming World at target0
