Don't Throw Food Away Challenge 2012

Hurray! Good to see the challenge back, just a pity the old one was deleted.
Last month my food waste dropped to an astonishingly low for us £1.50.
I'm not as optimistic for this month as we spent a fair bit of time at rellies. So I'm also going to aim for £4.
To chuck a few suggestions at Jackie O, I'd probably slow roast the tomatos so I could use them in pasta sauces/salads or breads. The celery I'd either do as a cream of celery soup, or maybe fry down and freeze in portion sizes. We eat a lot of home made soups, pasta sauces and risottos, and fried celery is a good base for those.

Hey SpikeyHedgehog, good to see you back this month.
Am sure you will be get another good result this month. If I had your fresh bread I'd cut into dice and fry/bake to form chunky croutons for soups or salads... nom!
You could also do a lovely bread and butter pudding with that - so long as you have custard/stuff to make custard.0 -

Hello! Love the sound of this thread, so I thought I'd take a peek. Only husband and myself, and he does all the cooking. We throw very little away, but any food waste goes into the compost bin or the council food bin. As from next week (I think), the new refuse system gets under way, so it'll be severely frowned upon is any food goes into the general waste.
Leftover milk is a bit of a problem for us. Can't buy it in any smaller quantity than a pint, I don't take milk in drinks (and often drink fruit tea anyway), and milk that's even the teeniest bit off makes me heave. We rarely eat puds other than fruit or yoghurt (both of us need to watch our weight), and can only eat one milk-based sauce a week, so at least some gets tipped down the sink.
On the other hand, I've found that buying two bags of clementines for the price of one in the Co op isn't necessarily a bargain. We had one bag, my mum had the other, but we both threw out three fruits, as they'd got bruised and went rotten. We've now decided to buy loose ones instead, because we can make sure we have sound fruit.
Sorry to ramble!

Nope, I still get 'invalid link' :eek:0

Hi
Milk freezes really well. and I often buy more than I need and freeze it so I dont go shopping too often and get tempted... you might try portioning it up in old water/fizzy pop bottles and then just take out what you need? Just make sure you leave a little room in the bottle for it to expand when it freezes.
Hope that helps. Good luck with the challenge

Odd, because it works for me
Anyway - it's a new year and so a new thread... and I'm pretty sure that I linked to the Old One in the first post of this one - just for those who like to browse back.

I've never thought of doing that, which is odd given that my mum does it. Good idea, though. will have to look out some suitable containers.0
