Made a beef and pak choi stir fry last night, never had pak choi before so was pleased it got used. DH said it was a bit weird, somehow managed to taste dry and undercooked but he ate it anyway, so did the kids. So managed to make one steak feed all three of them with enough left over for DH lunch today :j. Anyone got any ideas what else I could do with Pak Choi incase I get it again? We are not really big on stir fries TBH.
Today I need to use up some broccoli which is a bit past it's best... I got a huge veg box delivered last week and I'm slowly managing to fight my way through it all!Grocery Challenge February 2012 £252.19/£200

used the eat by 30 Jan coleslaw today. Rinsed it (do I need then to say I threw away the mayo?) and chucked it in the minestrone soup along with left overs from diy pizza party (chopped red onion, red pepper, green pepper, mushrooms, carrot sticks, sliced toms, sliced green and black olives (so no extra salt needed) plus stock from boiled up chop bone from night before and pork flakes that yielded, one carton of passata, some basil and some little macaroni shapes that came in soup kit I got for crimbo. It was extremely lish if I say so myself, and really all thanks to this thread
oh and there's plenty for tomoz (and probs another helping for the freezer cos I never sure how long soup with meat stock will last in the fridge). Rest of pizza for tea tonight with remains of cucumber sticks.

I tend to make a broccoli and cauliflower cheese. If I don't have any cauliflower then I add it to a Macaroni Cheese. Also make a cheese and brocolli Souffle Omelette.
You can also make a light tempura batter and make Tempura Brocolli with a sweet & sour dip (wish I had some), as am making a Chinese meal for tea.MSE Addiction, should come with a health warning:money:0 -
one and a half cucumbers
Half a pouch of beef stock
three rock hard clementines (think like bullets)
One bag of Bistro Salad
one vegetable previously masquerading as a small carrot
*hangs head in shame*
In our defence there is no reason why the salad stuffs should have "gorn orf"...we must have had a bad batch. And thw bag of clementines was dodgy from the start. Harrumph.0 -
So concerned about using up my Savoy Cabbage and whoopsied Vegetable Spring Rolls, I had overlooked the remainder of a reduced ready made salad.
Cost me 50p, threw away just under 1/4, so guess 12p. Just when I thought I was doing so well.MSE Addiction, should come with a health warning:money:0 -
I am ADDICTED to this thread! I have been reducing the amount I buy in order to reduce the amount I throw - there is only me, cant believe my shopping bill can get so much! I am using up my stocks - going well so far, only 1/4 tub of hummus (tasted yucky). Reading through all these posts (took me a couple of nights) I have picked up so many tips and it has made me really think about what I am buying. Thank you all!0

First waste of the month... 1/8th of a made up chocolate custard that had separated nastily at the back of the fridge  (I swear it was hiding - there have been several days this week when I would have killed for chocolate pud!) The whole cost 34p so 9p declared.
Meanwhile I got a big bag of whoopsied chillies that are threatening to let me down.... better start the recipe hunt!I think a spicey chutney is called for.
Off to change my signature.
Have a lovely evening every oneDFWNerd 1417

Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't posted on here for a while....but it has been a tale of two halves on the food front:
Firstly, we have been doing really well with using things up of late and making our food stretch further. For instance I made a soup today from manky bits of veg (leek, onion, carrot and celery) that had been in the bottom of the fridge. I would have normally thrown them out but the soup was gorgeous
Last week we had 8 salad potatos that were looking sorry for themselves and were a bit squishy, instead of throwing thema away I boiled them up and we had them for lunch.
So these are the things that I am proud of .but then....
We had to throw away a swede that was way past it'd best (40p - although technically nothing as I liberated it from Mums before Christmas!), one parsnip (20p). I also bought two white turnips which I normally like. I cooked them up and they were horrible really sour and I had really bad stomack ache. I had eaten 1/3 they were 1.20 so say 80p?
Thats £1.40 to add in - never mind onwards and upwards hey?My beloved Grandmas mottos::A "A penny saved is a penny earnt"; "Nothing's a bargain unless you need it" "Mend and make do" #

Hi KylieMinoag - these are a good way to use up chillis (assuming you don't want to freeze them): http://jamesbonfieldrecipes.wordpress.com/2010/11/07/creole-style-chilli-tomato-sauce/ and http://jamesbonfieldrecipes.wordpress.com/2010/11/14/piri-piri-sauce/
I get requests to make the creole one and it keeps for ages.0
