I thought I was doing so well this month having thrown nothing away yet, until...

I went to put some stuff in the bin and spotted 4 slices of burnt toast in there!!

I thought OH making me toast last night was too good to be true!

Therefore I am going to add 20p to my total as it was a nice crusty loaf which was quite expensive :(
  • Any suggestions for what to do with some garlic roule (soft cheese thing)? Somehow ended up in my fridge, no idea why as I don't like soft cheese! I know I could add it to pasta but I prefer a tomatoey pasta sauce to a cheesy one.

    Needs to be vegetarian please.

    Cheers x

How about stuffed into large mushrooms and cooked in the oven?

  • Just had to clear a half eaten trifle out of the fridge. I made it last week trying to use up stuff that needed using. Obviously nobody liked it much. Reckon about 70p. Not happy.

Well, I emptied the fridge yesterday.

Out went some very sad looking celery, two limes, two lemons, half a tub of natural yoghurt and something else but have forgotten. Not good.
  • The grocery spending challenge is keeping me accountable, so I think I'm up to this challenge as well!

I've always been disgraceful at buying too much food and chucking it out. Trying much harder now I'm almost grown up...;)

I won't set a target though if that's okay, I'll just record the cost of any food I waste.

Great tips on here, I'm off now to find a recipe for homemade vegetable stock as I can't afford to buy any this month. :)

Need some help. We go on holiday on Saturday so I'm running down the fridge. I have half a red cabbage from before Xmas, and a cucumber. What can I do with them?

    In a hot baked potato?

Personally I would make overfilled sandwiches with a strong cheese and plenty of black pepper, served with handmade crisps for a great snack meal. I could demolish a round right now.

I had to throw away 4 small plums this morning, they had been hanging around for a month and were never going to ripen :(.

My Dad stews under ripe plums & pears and makes them into a fruit compote type of pudding - he just adds extra brown sugar to help them along.

Been quite successful past few days, used all food bought only I have noticed a large proportion of the mushrooms I bought last week are now growing their own fungus ...hmm looks like either mushroom soup or garlic mushrooms on toast for supper.

Sorry for not updating sooner. I'm still not doing as well as I would like but I am much much better.
I have been searching through the food to see if I can use anything in what I'm making.

I was very annoyed by a tesco bogof which left me with two huge bags of brussels. I have a fab recipe for sprout and caremalised onion soup (sophie grigson) but didn't get round to it. So we have had sprouts in so many mixed veg combos. They now look a bit sad and are being fed to the rabbit 5 at a time. poor rabbit.

I have been using things up as work lunches. We have a toaster and microwave at work so I can take leftovers-which seems to be what many of us do so it's fun.

I found a marguerite patten recipe for muligatawny soup which is cheap and will use up bits of chutney and sultanas etc. I made this up and froze three portions. We had nan breads the other night and instead of wasting some or forcing them down I froze them in seperate bags and will heat up with the soup at work.

Here is my proud moment....My three chickens.
I buy whole chickens all the time now because they are better quality and super cheap that way. In waitrose two ok breasts was £6 and a whole plump lovely chicken was 4-8 depending on welfare etc. So I learnt to portion etc. My method was leaving me with carcasses. (I plan to get some poultry shears and joint properly in future.) anyway this was leaving me with loads of bodies with too much meat to bin.
From my three chickens I had three curries with breasts. Two meals of joints (cooked in reggae reggae sauce. It's the one your meant to do on the hob but I use it to bake joints-covered for half hour and then uncovered for half hour, they go super sticky)

Today I boiled up the three carcasses to make a casserole. I skimmed off a whole cup full of fat (now set solid in my fridge) and strained the leftover liquid and boiled down to the most amazing stock ever. (I now know that my previouse stock fails were because they weren't reduced enough)

I'll use the fat to fry and saute stuff-maybe try some matzo balls.

I have a long way to go but I am happy that I haven't had to clear out a ton of food for a while. Just odd manky carrots etc. Planning my shopping better and not buying as many lunch things-that way I have a space to use things up.

Sorry if this was long and waffly and well done if you read it all. :p

I stole an idea from a eurodisney cafe that works well with old mushrooms. If you make a small thick white sauce (the flour, butter and milk kind-bechamel) with mixed herbs or dried sage . Make a sandwhich up with the sauce and some butter fried mushrooms and stick it in a panini press or grill it. Amazing stuff. probably can't be very healthy but never mind.

omg i can't believe how thick i am. i can freeze half a loaf. d'oh. rather than worrying whether i can finish the loaf before the last slices go mouldy i can freeze half the loaf. because i have been saving bread bags i can even freeze half the loaf in the right bread bag. i have also frozen the rest of the pesto in an ice cube tray, another thing i usually have to chuck when it's developed a furry hat. loving this thread :D
