Mrs C - I paid for a bloke to come in with an industrial cleaner - probably more expensive than doing it myself BUT carpets were left very dry and it looked like HARD work;)
He was from a local, independant carpet shop.
To my shame it looked like Kim and Aggie's show - he did a 'run' up the dining room carpet (to be fair a very high traffic area.) and I blushed! You could DEFINITELY tell where he'd been! :rotfl:Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

Update from me for today:
Thursday
Clean out your fridge, and use up or get rid of all the leftovers - done! I now just have cheeses left (outside of 'normal' stuff that is) which might me devoured now my big sis is over, and if not they'll be grated or crumbled into pasta bakes)
Wash, dry and iron any tablecloths, napkins etc - done
Water any plants, including real Christmas trees - na
Clean the bathroom - both given a good wipes over
If any of you have had new sock, pjs etc do you have old ones to get rid of? - ha ha... I only had one pair of new socks which I've already worn. And my one pair of new jammies are going to be worn tonight!
HHI - not needed
What are your flying aims for 2012, share with us now - flying aims... to get on top of, and KEEP on top of my housework... Now I have a utility room I have a pantry - woo hoo! I seem to be fast filling it with baking stuff which I'm looking forward to making use of
Do you still need to find a home for some presents? - Yep, most of the kids toys are still floating around
I also started on my bedroom - loads of stuff from downstairs during the building work ended up piled in the bedroom
... I *almost* wish I hadn't started - it looks far worse at the moment! April 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -
Thanks for the carpet cleaning advice. In the morning I'm going to phone an independent place we used years ago (in the hope that they still exist) and compare their price with equipment hire etc, factoring in time and energy.

I remember it being hard work when I did it myself before, so I know what I'd prefer...
I've now booked a night at a travelodge for our Germany trip in April. :j We fly from Stansted early in the morning and are a good 3 hours away from the airport, so it seemed the most sensible option. Airport parking next...0 -

Carpet cleaning advice needed, please.
We're having a new suite delivered next Friday. The quality is not as good as the current one and it's not as nice, but we can't replace at the same level at the moment and the old sofa is falling to pieces. Having a second, smaller sofa will also be more useful than two chairs.
If I can manage to get rid of the old suite via freecycle before Friday it would be an ideal opportunity for cleaning the carpet. I'll phone someone in the morning, but may have to do it myself. Where would you go to hire a carpet cleaning machine?
Any advice gratefully received, as I borrowed a friends machine in the past, but don't want to do that again.
We hired the red coloured from one from Mr M a few months ago and it was good managed to do more rooms than we thought we would, quite a surprise how much dirt was picked up!!0 -
Have only just managed to get on but did manage to do lots incl cleaning bathroom, washing nappies, washing kitchen floor, dysoning right thru and tidying, dh did lots of it too.Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0

Cleared all the gibble out from under the coffee table. One carrier bag of paper products. Minion took my empty folders upstairs and put them in the bookcase for me  AND she took my quilt and pillows up (having helped herself to them earlier) AND has made a reasonable start on her pit! AND fed the splats!
We still have one brand new jigsaw piece to go, but I haven't looked under the sofas yet. I am also eyeing up the Xmas tree, but that needs Minion to go up into the loft and get the boxes down for me.
I have no idea whether the bin men will collect my rubbish on Saturday. When we ran out of space in recycling (bearing in mind they only take half of it on any one week), I started shoving it all in the general waste bin until that couldn't take anymore, then it's just in bin bags beside the bin. I couldn't bring myself to put the food in the 'composting bin'/slime bucket as the bin men hate collecting them and usually drop rotting food in the road as the composting bags have dissolved in the caddy at least 5 days previously.
What fool thought fortnightly collections were ever going to work?
Have requested for a council someone to collect the old sofa, as it's been rained on too many times for it to be Freecycleable now. At present, I'm living in a fairly nice street with an old sofa and tons of bin bags in the front garden. I am sure this is not a popular decoration for round here.
I am sorely tempted to empty the fridge of everything and start from scratch, as there is so much stuff in there I probably won't use. Also tempted to buy an undercounter freezer and stack it on top of the fridge as I need to store stuff rather than wait for it to go off. Is it possible to do this without destroying the fridge? (I would only get a cheap freezer as a. I have spent far too much at Christmas and b. how sophisticated do you need for storing frozen peas and meat for the splats?).
I have had a table top freezer (which is rubbish and the seal is borked) standing on top of it with no problems, but it is just far too small and I am not prepared to chuck my lovely, lovely posh fridge to replace it with an even cheaper quality fridgefreezer, which would be the sensible option, but no. I love my fridge.
Other than that, I've done very little cleaning, apart from throwing some bleach down the loos, washing a quilt cover and starting an odd trainer collection [strike]trail wherever Minion has passed[/strike], as I have been back at bass lessons and, much to my relief, haven't forgotten how to play with no club, no gigs and no practice for days.
Playing again cheered me up. Especially as the GP practice had arranged to have the nurse give me a steroid injection through the hospital, I had collected the prescription and walked down there, waited, only to find that the nurse had taken one look at what she was expected to do (ie, inject it in exactly the same way as all the other depo type injections she does everyday and the ordinary nurses at the hospital do it), seen it said steroid and refused point blank to do it as she isn't trained to inject into joint spaces or tendon sheaths - which she DOESN'T have to do . So I have to wait for the new year for the doctor who prescribed it to come back from leave to do it, as I wasn't waiting two hours to see a locum who wasn't going to administer treatments anyway.
I am in a bit of pain and I am not happy about this, especially as the hospital cancelled my appointment and rebooked in May because the GP said they would do it instead.
But as I said, playing cheered me up. That and the gradual clearing of the fridge leftovers. The ones in bottles, of course.
Flying may well have to wait until the jab is done - and because it's so overdue, it might not work fully until the next one, as the dosage has been reduced in the assumption of an increased frequency. The odd one armed flap will have to do, I suppose.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll
