Being devil's advocate, why wasn't Ex told that an Xbox would be bought on his behalf for son ready for Xmas in which the £200 he was going to give would pay for it.

    ^ this.

    Being 'uncommunicative' swings both ways.

Hope you find a satisfactory resolution.

So I'm guessing what happened is your ex saw the console on offer cheaper than the £200 he said he'd pay towards it and decided to get it. To be honest, that's quite reasonable, especially as you can get the Xbox 360S 250Gb console for less than £200 (both the local Game and HMV had them at 169.99 last week).

Why did your son already have the game that came with the console you had bought?

And did you tell your ex that you would buy the console?

total lack of communication on both sides. Ex should have said that he was planning to buy the console (hardly a crime - in fact, some might say it was thoughtful; his way of making sure the child had a gift to open). OP should have told ex what she was planning.

Simply because of timing. We were under the impression the cash had already been handed over to middle one earlier in the week as per what had been previously said. We had no reason to believe the original plans had changed and hadn't heard otherwise. We bought the xbox after the original 'pay day' iyswim.

Ex wouldn't have told us of the change as he would think it was none of our business and middle one wouldnt have called to tell us as he would have assumed we already knew what the arrangements were.

We only just found out earlier during a quick call to say he was getting organised to leave, that the original plans were not the case, son was only going to pick up today instead and the item to be picked up had changed from cash to an xbox.. I was too busy ranting earlier but I should have included the timeline as an explanation. I did say calm wasn't going to be in evidence. :D

Anyway, what's done is done. I was just angry earlier on as I spent years being let down by this man. He lied his way through our marriage and I guess those feelings of anger and frustration still come to the fore whenever there's any involvement with him.

    Just ignore me. :D

Personally if it was me,, i would have gave ex a quick call BEFORE i bought it just to confirm it was ok, as he was buying it /paying for it.
I dont really see how it was your ex's fault, I see it as your fault for not clarifying what you were doing..

Sometimes you cant see the trees for the woods, when you carry so much anger for somone....

Sell it on ebay, facebook or cash converters if the ex hasnt got the receipt.

I think its a bit more difficult with the game shops to take it back, if it was from say tesco, then they should take it back easier

What I thought you were going to say was middle son turned up and your ex refused to hand over any dosh towards xbox so loooking at it that way, you're an xbox up. Annoying I know but see if you can sell it on if you can't return it.
