We had a Dyson upright for many years with extended warranties but parts kept having to be replaced. No loss of suction though.

We now have a new VAX upright which is much lighter than the Dyson. It's also very powerful. They offer a 6 year parts guarantee.

I don't think Miele yet do a bag-less vacuum cleaner?

I don't think they do and possibly they never will. Quite a few of the popular models and higher end manufacturers have stuck with paper bags. The very popular henry cleaners still have paper bags too.

Bags are great for stopping the dust getting everywhere inside the cleaner and make for very quick easy emptying. I found that bagless cleaners tend to get much more clogged up and dirty inside and their filters tend to block up rapidly too. Bags are good for allergy suffers too, the dirt and dust is ready bagged and just goes straight in the bin. Better filtration will protect the motor better too. My electrolux cylinder from the 1970s still works perfectly and bags are widely available, so I suspect there are many others still working well out there.

As for what to buy, aside from always getting one with paper bags, I like cylinder cleaners as they just to much lighter and easier to use. Using attachment tools for dusting and such is much easier with a cylinder as well, as the hose is longer and you can lift the cleaner much more easily too. I paid extra for a turbo brush with a rotating brush roller and it cleans as well as an upright. You can also use the turbo brush in ways an upright can't, for example brushing and vacuuming vertical surfaces or objects like the couch. I used to really like my upright as the rotating brush got the carpets very clean, but now I much prefer the cylinder and turbo brush as it does the same, but also does more and it's easier to use.

Nice one Pink Lady. I also picked mine up from JL yesterday and it's AWESOME! Did a great job throughout the house yesterday, going to do the skirting and the bottoms of skirting on carpet tonight, makes a huge difference to the old bosch. I'll use that one for hoovering up rubbish now!

Will you take out the extra 8 years with Miele? I noticed a good deal on hoover bags on e-b4y, however these aren't genuine Miele bags... link below. Would you use these or stick with Miele at £2 a pop.

If you find better, please let me know..... also, would 'emptying full bags' into the bin and reusing a few times be possible or will this break the hoover?

I was extremely surprised by how bias the chap in John Lewis was towards Dyson, even after me explaining my experience of them has been far from great. Are these 'partners' on commission?

The vacuum sound great but how long does a bag last? they don't sound reusable and I think the cost would put me off. That's why I like a bagless.

I think using a cheaper version would invalidate the guarantee and might not work as well.

How would a manufacturer know if you were using 'non Miele' bags?

I take your point about that, but if they don't work as well as the Miele bags, why pay that much for a Miele vacuum if you aren't going to get the performance. I suppose you would just have to compare the performance of the bags and see.

9 years of using a Miele cylinder S4810 and never ever bought another original bug after the 3 shipped with got consumed, the paper ebay ones do exactly the same as the fabric (for me anyway).

If you have allergies I was told that the fabric ones should be better holding the dust from the machine to the bin, is it worth the extra? I am not sure.
