naughty children

hi, i,m not trying to be nasty or anything but i know 2 people who get dla for their child as they say they have a d d ..attention deficite disorder {i think that is what it is called}..
i have seen the mothers with their children regular every day from when they were very small untill their age now aprox 6 and the mothers let the children do what they want, never correcting them when they do things like getting up and jumping on your table ,going in the kitchen and coming back in with a whole tin of quality street which they eat what they can then unwrap the rest and chuck them on the floor or kicking your husband in the goolies because he won,t put the cartoons on tv ..the only time they tell the child off is when he starts wining at them because he wants something ,mum, mum, mum. then mother lets rip at the top of her voice SHUTT UPPP...i don,t really believe these children in question have this illness at all , i think that they are just bought up by awfull parents who don,t correct them and now they are spoilt naughty kids..
i just wondered what other people think about this as i also see a few other parents at school who are lacking in parental skills...
do you think there are a lot of kids getting extra dla because their children are just naughty ,brought up badly by ignorant parents..
like i said i am not trying to be nasty or dis dla . i know that if you do have a child with such an illness then you deserve and need all the help you can get for both you and the little ones.

i would say until you are in their shoes don't judge ! qualifying for DLA is not easy and if they do receive it then im sure its justified, unless you have some help to offer them then id mind my own business if i was you.

  • I don't think there are many parents claiming 'extra' DLA for having naughty children.

Contrary to popular opinion DLA is not easy to get. The forms are complicated to fill out, and there are medicals for many people too.

The government's own figures show that DLA fraud is actually very rare.

DLA was not awarded because the children have ADD/ADHD but because they have care and/or mobility needs over and above those of a 'typical' child of their age.

I see so-called ADHD patient all the time, and have serious doubts about the diagnosis, although I see very similar behavioural traits in the parents. Psychiatrists will agree, and then tell you it is hereditary .

"so called" or not a diagnosis is completed by someone qualified to do so, my autistic teen copies some of my "quirks/mannerisms" that doesnt make her any less autiastic just means Ive got to watch what i say/do

  • ADHD exists. Sometimes, the behaviour manifests as "naughtiness", so people think it's OK to be judgemental about it. The problem with ADHD is, its severity correlates with the home environment of a child, so if the child in question has the neurological ADHD make-up and a chaotic home life, their symptoms will be more pronounced. Parents of low socio-economic status are not likely to a) remember to give out Ritalin, b) implement structure, c) keep psychiatric appointments, d) put a lot of effort into their disabled child.

People could similarly comment that someone's autistic child was spoilt or out of control if they saw them having a meltdown in a supermarket. A lot of under-educated mothers have kids with disabilities and don't have enough support to cope with them. If you told your ADHD child 5 times a day "don't do that", concerning the same bit of bad behaviour, you would learn to pick your battles with them.

I suggest you watch some documentaries on the home lives of people with ADHD. The symptoms really are only relieved with regular medication, a lot of parental time and a rigid routine. Most poor people cannot provide even one of these components, so their children are labelled "brats" and grow into troubled adults. They are also prone to getting into trouble with the law.

Not to mention, most children "grow out" of ADHD with proper coaching, but those with unstable homelives keep their symptoms into adulthood.
  • I would also add that I'm sick of kids with ADHD, autism and other learning difficulties being maligned in the media and in society as a whole.

It seems that you only get a glowing newspaper article if your child is an angel in a wheelchair, or mute, or terminally ill. Any child whose actual disability affects their behaviour is seen as "bad". It is sickening.

    That surprises me.

Since ADHD is quite often linked with Autism......which i have been repeatedly told by my son's clinical psychologist is NOT hereditary.

I do wish the medical profession would make their mind up

  • Autism does, I believe, run in families - if a couple have one child with autism, there is a higher chance of them having a second child with it as well. Also, in some cases, a father has mild autism (sometimes seen as 'odd' or eccentric behaviour) and has a child with a more severe form of autism. I know families like this, including one family where the dad was only diagnosed in the last couple of years. Autism tends to run through the males in the family, although there are females with the condition as well.
