I just thought I'd mention that I belong to 2 other threads that have been really helpful (sorry I'm hopeless at linking to threads). First, I joined the 'giving up/cutting down alcohol thread' as I knew I was drinking too much and all the empty calories weren't helping my hopes for weightloss. I found that thread really helpful. When I had that sorted, I joined Slimming World. I did go to classes but also joined the SW thread on here. There are plenty of posters, like you evilsquid who have the books and do their own thing. Again it's a very supportive thread which keeps me focused.

That is the same as me. I joined in 2yrs ago and boy did it sort out the heavier more frequent drinking evenings. Now it is much much less frequent in amounts and time. Which is so much better for me and I feel better too. Then it was time to sort the weight loss out on an online weight loss plan that worked a treat when I didn't think it would!

Fabwise today results - skincare usual routine and nail oil and handcream applied.

Just debating whether to downbrand on the handcream from the expensive long lasting brand to a supermarket brand. Will buy one to try out as I'll use it for quick in the day applications.

Home hair dye at some point over the next couple of days too so will do a hair prewash treatment tomorrow to get my hair ready for it.

Can anyone suggest a good but affordable range that I can go and get made over with by a lady in Boots/Debenhams? I need an everyday look really that makes me look 10 years younger:rotfl:

My issue is that the ladies that do the make up seem to wear a bit of every product they sell:eek: and will expect me to buy everything - I'm happy to invest in a few reasonably priced items but can't afford to buy the whole range.

the best thing to do is to go into all the department stores you can get to and have a good look at the people working on them and what make up they have on. I've found that if they have caked on foundation and heavy eye make up, they will probably do it to you too. if you like how someone looks, ask them to do your make up.

don't worry about being pressurised into buying it all. if you really like a product then go ahead but don't be afraid to say no. if its your first time with a new foundation shade on, always say that you need to see it in daylight first before you buy it. never trust the store lighting because it will always be different to outside. take a small mirror with you, just nip outside and look at it to check that you don't have tide marks and it doesn't look like a completely different shade to your neck. check it doesn't completely wash you out either.

if you want a more daytime look and for a first time, i'd probably go for bobbi brown or bare minerals. their ethos is very much accentuate what you have now rather than slap it on. I've been to both of them for makeovers and they actually listen to your answers when they ask what you already use and do.

bobbi brown has a brilliant "Learn" section on her website (http://www.bobbibrown.co.uk/cms/learn/articles_index.tmpl?cm_re=Gnav-_-Learn-_-ViewAllArticles) so have a read around that before you go in so you know what they might try and put on you or recommend. her books are amazing too, I've got them all.

if you want a revamp, also deserving a mention is Lisa Eldridge's blog (http://www.lisaeldridge.com/) she does the make up for a lot of celebrities but her how-to videos are absolutely brilliant and she has covered literally every topic on basic make up application, daytime looks, party looks and looks to make you look gorgeous the day after a party.

mac do some really wonderful products but the assistants are very made up and the makeovers I've had with them have been very heavy handed and far too much of everything for me. to me, mac is very much "night out" make up: full face of foundation, smokey eyes, false lashes or statement lips.

if you are going to invest in anything, properly colour matched foundation that makes your skin look like you've just come back from a spa holiday is the thing to buy. if you need it, i'd pay more for properly matched concealer too, especially for under your eyes. later on when you get the hang of it all, a good set of brushes might also come in handy. the rest you can get from boots. if you know how to apply it properly, a £3 eyeliner from boots looks the same as a £13 mac eye kohl.

adelight- what do you use your derma roller for? and which one is it? what size?

I've had it for a while tbh but haven't kept up with it (only used it twice), its one I got from ebay, 1.5 cms and I'm trying it out for wrinkles. Can't comment yet as I need to give it a better go before I can say if it has any effect. I've researched it a bit and decided to use it everyday - not too visciously but enough to feel the tingle and see if it makes the wrinkles less deep. Will report back when I feel I've given it time to work.

    Morning girlies :santa2:

Chloris, I live in boots too. I bought a pair of wedges a few months ago, they were a lot higher than they looked (I bought online). I've practised and practised but I still can't walk in them :D

I have an Instyler and I know how to use it :snow_laug

I've been using the £4 spray from Lidl lately (the name escapes me at the moment), but suddenly it seems too sickly. I had the Soap & Glory Big Splendour for Christmas and it contained Mist You Madly. This is my new daily perfume :D I use SJP's Lovely when I go out, which isn't often so it lasts ages.

My rebounder has been outside all over Christmas, I'll be bringing it back in today and having a good bounce.

There's lots of choc lying around the house. I had a massive binge yesterday but believe me, it was completely justified. At least I didn't open more wine. Apart from that, I've been quite good. Lots of salad and fruit, with the odd nibble of an After Eight or a sweet from the Roses tin.

Can anyone recommend a good sports bra? Now that I can exercise a bit more, a normal bra isn't good enough. I can't spend more than £20 - though the cheaper the better :D

    Good Morning x

Im also feeling less fab and more frump this morning as Im now on antibiotics for an ear infection - but they are working and I feel much brighter today.

Wish I had taken my own advice re the sweeties yesterday:eek::eek::eek: Suffice it to say Im on my own mini challenge to lose the pounds that I have gained over Christmas. I follow the Old Style Weight Loss Challenge and we have a new one starting on the 6th January:T:T:T We are a very friendly bunch so you are very welcome.

I am very interested in the make-up and nail care comments. I am beginning to get to grips with these and ordered some nail polish yesterday. Looking forward to doing a manicure and polish. Hugs x

  • Hi Everyone...

    Can i join in? :o

This thread is only a week old and already so long, so I need to catch up. I usually end up going out looking like a frump, or buying things that are a bargain, but make me look like im wearing a bin bag. I am definitely in need of learning to look fab.

And I want to find a boyfriend, so I had better start making an effort. Right now I think all i do is scare people away :eek:

Hello, I just found this thread via a post on the 'cutting down alcohol' thread by evilsquid, and I've sat and read it all with my morning tea. I would love to join in as I too have just slowly let myself slide.

I'm just into 'middle age' but feel and look older than my years, and since we moved to a more rural area I just don't make the same effort as when I was a city slicker! Having three kids and living through house renovations doesn't help either so I feel that 2012 shoild be the year when I 'recover myself from the dirge of the past few years'.

By the solstice I want to feel good in a bikini (I wear one regardless, just want to look better in it), feel stronger and have a much better mental attitude - at 42 I keep thinking like a much older person (can't do this/that, getting on a bit, have to expect a bit of deteriation etc, I sound like an old mammy!). I also want to fit into my 'target trousers', which will be a challenge but do-able - better get over to the slimming world thread!

In a very wierd coincidence, like Heebie Jeebies I'm also living in Switzerland for a while - where abouts are you?
    Trying to keep in budget.

Tru I did the basic zumba work out last night, nothing too strenuous as I have sciatica at the moment down one leg. Been like this since I did those yoga stretches before Christmas. Think I overextended and it's upset my back  a bit of exercise is better than nothing.

Nothing extra in way of fabbing, kids are sleeping rubbish and with my back being uncomfortable I feel exhausted :( DD keeps waking at midnight and this morning DS was awake from 5am. May as well go on holiday and pack these bags that are under eyes

Evidsquid thanks for those links, especially liked the Lisa Elderidge :D

Welcome to all the newbies :D

Molly hope you're feeling better soon xx

Oh no, you too? :( I didn't realise how painful sciatica was til I had it. People would mention their lower back and I'd think it was like backache. I had no idea it travelled down your leg too, and made life pretty much impossible. Mine is going now, but it's taking it's time. Every now and then my right leg 'goes' (don't know how to describe it) and I have to stop completely still for a few seconds, then be very careful about how I stand up or take the next few steps.
