The actual marriage used to be just to tie assets together and tie themselves together in the eyes of God, nowadays you ARE already common law wife/husband if you are together 10 yrs and have children!!!

Maybe in your own mind... but not in the eyes of the law.
There is no such legal term as 'common law wife/husband' - completely meaningless in law.

    Spot on.
    Cohabitation - living together

There are over four million couples living together in England and Wales in cohabitation, and they are given legal protection in several areas. However, they and their families have significantly fewer rights and responsibilities than people who are married or who have formed a civil partnership.

Many people think that, after living with their partner for a few years, they become 'common law husband and wife' with the same rights as married couples. This is not the case. In fact, couples who live together have hardly any of the same rights as married couples or civil partners.

There is no such thing as ‘common law marriage’.

  • My grandmother still asks me if everything is ok with my OH and says she hoped I haven't been disappointed in marriage... we've been together for four years, lived together for three and got married 5 months ago... if I was going to be disappointed in him then it would have happened by now! The only thing that's changed is that we signed a piece of paper, played dress-up for a day and went on holiday!Having said that, I don't find it annoying when people ask, they're just making conversation after all.

How far are these threads going then?

I could start one 'Have you ever been asked a question by anyone that has annoyed you at any time, EVER!!'

People might just be trying to make conversation, if you talk to them you might make a new friend!

i techinically did start it cause i saw the other threads unfortunatly it seems some people have decided to get on their soapboxes

  • I would never call someone a wife or husband if that's not what they are - seems weird to me! I also don't understand unmarried men referring to 'the Mrs' - there is no Mrs!!!

I don't see the problem with using girlfriend or even other half - seem much more suitable to me.

Lots of people seem to get married after doing all the things that marriage used to precede, my wife would'nt live with me until we were married, neither of us would have wanted any b@stard offsprings, had she moved in (my preferred option) and gone on to have kids outside of wedlock, getting married later would have been just odd & pointless.

Unless you have people following you around asking you why did you not married and generally sticking nose into your business and questioning your decision and trying to tell you you must do it otherwise you will regret it and you must as it is the done thing etc I really cannot see how your post is anything like any of the posts you are referring to... sorry.
