  • I suppose it's more of a courtesy title, the way housekeepers of old were always "Mrs", even when they were unmarried.

    What would you prefer?

They could ask you how the common-law wife is.

I would take that with a pinch of salt to be honest and just reply with "she's fine" or whatever you want to say she is.

What pee's me off more is, I was in the jewellers with OH, he was buying a watch, and the person behind the counter kept mentioning rings like "ooh so next time you come in will it be for a ring" we ignored it, and then she kept going on and on about it, until eventually OH laughed and said "oh no, I'd never want to spend a lifetime with her" just to get her to shut the hell up. It was so embarrassing.

They are giving your good lady a 'courtesy' title.
Just out of interest James - What do you think they should call her?
  • Missus would be the equivalent of wife, as it's the title of a wife.

I suppose that the answer is to inform them that she's your girlfriend. Otherwise, people who are unsure will tend to use "wife" in favour of "girlfriend" for fear of inadvertently offending.

I sympathise - Now who did you want to hit? the twit who behaved so unprofessionaly behind the counter..........or the twit who put you down (OH)?

  • I suspect that it's more her that they don't want to offend than you.

Oh I knew he was joking, we are planning on getting married at some point, but with an unplanned child on the way, it's down our list of priorities at the moment. :o

He generally said it to shut her up, not because he meant it. It worked anyway :p
