I don't understand why people are prepared to make the far bigger commitment of having children together but don't want to make the lesser commitment of getting married.

On the other hand, if it's a lesser commitment, why bother?DevilsAdvocate1 wrote: »I don't understand why people are prepared to make the far bigger commitment of having children together but don't want to make the lesser commitment of getting married.
That's a total cop out if I ever heard it.weve just never had the time or the money
My answer, is that we were never bothered, either by what people thought, or what it meant.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
We had a waiter in a restaurant about a month ago refer to his partner as "the bird" I thought my OH's eyes were going to pop out his head. :rotfl:The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

I've never understood the "We can't afford to get married" line.
If you want to make the commitment you can get married for almost nothing at a registry office (or even a church) -you don't HAVE to have the cars, dress, reception etc -or even do it on holiday -Las Vegas is amazingly MS for that . Seems to a lot of people it's about the trimmings not the basics though.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Pretty much the same here.
When we come to buy a house, we'll register our partnership here in Holland, affording us the same legal rights as married couples. But that is only because of the legal rights it affords us and our future children. If we ever move back to the UK, then we'll be popping down to the registry office to get married for the same reason.
Otherwise, we don't see the point. We love each other, we're committed to each other, we know we want to spend the rest of our lives together and bring up a family, so what difference does getting married make? Other than the legal aspect, which is covered above.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

I have to say this is probably the most ridiculous thread today (only IMO).
What are they supposed to call her, your partner of 10 yrs?
Sorry, but g/friend b/friend is for teenagers. Or for the first 12 mths. Then it is at least partner.
Wife/husband/partner is not about whether you are married, it is about what you feel about the person - some people don't need a piece of paper to tell them how deep and commited the relationship is. that is what those people are refering to - I have no idea why would you be disputing your partner's position!!
The actual marriage used to be just to tie assets together and tie themselves together in the eyes of God, nowadays you ARE already common law wife/husband if you are together 10 yrs and have children!!!0 -
