Maybe it's not so much that she's charging and maybe that the family agree to chip in to give her a hand with the costs associated with it.

Anything other than that then I'm thanking my lucky stars I'm not a member of that family. If she's not very well off and this is the families way of helping her out financially at Christmas then what a nice family.

 I'm still sat her with my mouth open and I had to read it twice.

If I was her Mum I would have Christmas at mine and invite everyone there. :) Bring your own drinks and food contribution welcome.

Goodness me! Never heard this before.

In our family we always have the day at mine for all my family bros, sils, sis, kids, mum dad etc (18 of us!) That includes breakfast, lunch and an evening buffet type thing. It costs a small fortune but we all take different things to help out. Its my ds3's bday xmas day and my ds2's on boxing day hence the buffet thing and always coming to mine

This year i am providing the Xmas lunch but other members are bringing different bits ie SIL is bringing bacon and sausages for breakfast, bro and other sil is bringing the xmas desserts, other brother bringing crackers, some booze as well as doing the party bags for the kids etc

I felt bad when Mum said she would bring the majority of the buffet but after reading £30 per head i dont feel bad anymore :)

£30 a head... 18 of us... goodness maybe i could charge ay £50 a head and buy al the stuff myself considering its including brekkie and buffet too? i would be rolling in it lol :):):)

On a serious note is it not a contribution that they have all decided upon, instead of all binging a course etc? maybe shes struggling financially and the family dont want to not contribute if they know she cant afford it? Although £30 per head is very expensive. If she had a many for xmas as i do the feeding 18 is very very costly for xmas dinner, if not, well i am agast!
  • Would be interesting to know how it all started - did she feel taken for granted and put upon, for example, and so decided to charge them all to put them off (but it didn't ??)

But if it's as straightforward as it seems then, yes, just plain mean.

(A friend of mine went to the 30th wedding anniversary of her brother and his wife - and they had to pay £25 a head towards it ! My friend's husband was seething, especially as they're loaded, but my friend didn't want to fall out with them. They even charged their 80 year old, blind, mother !!! i asked her afterwards what the food was like and it sounded pretty ordinary - sausage rolls, sandwiches, a few cakes. They were disgusted. It's amazing what families will put up with to "keep the peace". Friends would never get away with it ...!!)

I'd definitely say you shouldn't go.
I'll do you a dinner in mine for £25 and i've got a load of homemade wine just finished so you don't even need to bring a bottle.

How awful, I definitely wouldn't go no matter who it upset.

14 at mine this year and most will bring a contribution, wine, crackers, dessert but to charge is outrageous. If you genuinely can't afford it then don't invite anyone.
