Have to say they always charged £1 at my children's junior schools and that was a while ago (kids are 14 and 18 now!). Charges usually covered a mince pie and a glass of sherry and leftovers went into the school fund. I thought charging was the norm to be honest.

    ok - update.

I couldnt phone my DIL this morning as she was in work and her phone would be switched off. I also knew that she would be finishing work at 1.00 and the nativity was at 1.30 - if she even bothered to turn her phone on I would be surprised!

I tried to phone the school to see if it would be ok to just turn up - but the line was constantly engaged!

Yes I sat at home - and mentally wished DG well. I didnt stew on it - I vented last night on here and that helped!

I saw Son, DIL and DG this afternoon over at the supermarket and asked her how it went.......was told he was a little star and behaved really well and they enjoyed it. I then said 'I wish I could have seen him, could you get me a ticket next time and I will pay you for it?'

I dont want to make an issue out of it - I am sure that DIL wasnt being deliberately thoughtless - she is working long hours and gets very stressed.

Thanks everyone for your replies - most of which have been very kind.

    Thank you for the update.
What did DIL say to your offer to pay for future tickets?

I think that was well handled. :)

Something along the lines of 'Oh er, um, er, er, ok'! with a rather red face! I just smiled sweetly and gave GS a byebye kiss! Son just stood there looking rather puzzled.

I should have said in my update - I gave up on getting a ticket around about 9.30. as I am sure that by then all the seating would have been set out.
I didnt just turn up on spec for two reasons - One, I have never in my life turned up anywhere, unless I was invited or had a ticket, and I dont intend to start now!
Two - The weather was absolutely appalling! gale force winds and rain and its a twenty minute walk!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I had had an invite or a ticket I would have got a taxi!

Inasmuch as the little "nation" of this family is concerned, she has! :D

She's tactfully made her stance clear, while giving the DIL an "out". Very simply achieved, but masterfully effective. Lol.

The family continues existing happily, and DIL knows better for next time.

I don't have to invite my Mom, she usually just invites herself anyway! Lol! She always finds out when one of my kids mentions the event to her.

The school have never said anything about a maximum number of guests. I know once the seats are full, there's usually room to stand at the back. The one time there was myself, hubby and my Mom and Dad.

OP - You handled it well. Although I would have myself been inclined to ask DIL when it was originally mentioned, then you probably wouldn't have missed it, but that's just my opinion.
