If he is passing a joint to his mates he is a supplier, the law makes no distinction between him and a dealer.

The law doesn't, but the police officers do.

At most, they will likely confiscate the joint and any other cannabis on the property, give him a telling off and then leave.

That is what always seemed to happen with the lads at school, and with my brother back in the day. No one ever got so much as an official verbal warning.

They only seemed to be interested in those who are in possession of a large quantity of the stuff.

  • They must be smoking ever such a lot if it's coming through the walls, what is your house made of?

My OH smokes a little now and then but the smell is never very strong (as he smokes roll up cigarettes too I can often not tell which it is) and certainly doesn't linger (as a non smoker I still have my sense of smell :)). In fact the actual leaves smell stronger than the smoke I think so maybe thay have a little factory going. If they're smoking 24/7 then this is more than likely as I don't know how else a few 18 year olds would afford it tbh.

If they have got a factory going then I'm sure the police will be interested but if they are just smoking a small amount recreationally that the police may not do anything, I don't know but we have many friends who when stopped on the street and found with some on them by the police, the police have just taken some for themselves and sent them on their way, guess it depends on your area.

I actually think it just smells like the tropical house of any zoo, which makes me a little susupicious of zoos to be honest!

If I were you I'd have another word with the kids themselves, if the smell is really that bad maybe insinuate that you think they might be growing and that if they want to keep you sweet they'll control the smell etc, keep on and on about it, there's nothing a stoner hates more than hassle when they're stoned ;).

My post should have said "smoke" any other drug, not take.

I still stand by the fact that they are being selfish

In this instance, they are being selfish, yes. They have been informed that the smell is seeping through to the neighbours place, and that simply opening their windows helps to relieve this.

However, that is not what you originally said. You said that anyone who smokes cannabis, or any other drug, is inherently selfish and that is just not true. And it's a sweeping generalisation.

Besides all of that, as it is only the smell that is seeping through, and not the smoke, I don't really see how this is any different than living next to someone who likes to cook strong smelling food often. My neighbours do, and some of it makes me want to gag! Solution: Plug in air freshener by the stairs where the smell is the worst, and a scented candle in the living room. Seems to do the trick.

In theory no there isn't a difference but I'd like to see someone actually be arrested for this. The police would hardly do anything if they caught someone smoking in the street so they'll hardly bother to go to the effort of raiding a house for personal use.

Surely you can even see the difference between passing a joint around some friends and selling to half the neighbourhood?
The point i'm making is that the next door neighbour knows that by them smoking cannabis it's affecting the OP, she has told them she finds the smell disgusting and it's affecting her house. They choose not to do anything to help....that's selfish is it not?

I fully agree with you the neighbours are being selfish as there is an easy solution to the problem and they're unwilling to take it. The whole family sounds like trouble though so I'm not surprised at this. However this isn't what you said. You said all drug users are selfish and you still haven't been able to justify your comments.

I can the law doesn't and the police choosing not to act is a failure on their part.
Personally if I was ever taking part in an illegal activity I would be making damn sure no-one was finding out about it, not stinking out a neighbours.

  • Wow what a lot of replies!

Will try and cover everything - sorry if i miss anything

When the mum was violent it was about a year ago, we stay out of each others waqy, say hi if we see each other but i think shes now realised her sons arent the little angels she once thought they was.

The (main) lad is 18 (I think?) and doesnt seem to be moving (although he has a serious GF - maybe she will take him away lol)

I rent - same Landlord as next door - and i REALLY dont want to move if i can help it. It's a housing association house, so very cheap rent (all other rent is nearly double what i pay) and I inherit a house so dont really want to be wasting a lot of money on high rent

Landlord isnt bothered, he tells me to speak to them myself

The smell isnt there 24/7 - it's more so in the evening when they are in their room - I think its possibly worse because their room is next to my bathroom and I have one of the big boilers in there so the heat is possibly making it worse? I cant plug an air freshener in on the stairs - No plug! Obviously there is no plug in the bathroom either. Have been using one of those auto scent smellies but it just doesnt work.

The person who said they are embarrassed because they dont want people thinking they smoke it - THATS ME!!!! :o

As I say - I'm an "each to their own" kinda person - I'd never ever go round screaming "its illegal" etc and demand they stop - It's just a bit of curtosy and to consider me.

Those of you who smoke it might not understand this - those who dont smoke might - I physically can not have a nice relaxing bath when they are smoking it because i cant stand to be in the bathroom - Thats how bad the smell is

I've mentioned the air sprays before - they arent interested

The walls are thin (not sure what they are made of!) but you do hear ALOT - you can hear them sneeze!!! So they cant be very thick (They are old collery houses so you would have thought they would be decent built!)

I understand its december, its cold and they dont want to lose the heat . . . but i dont know what else to suggest other than to open the window.

Is the spray expensive? Think it might be cheeky if i buy one, wrap it up in xmas paper and say "here" lol
  • If you can smell their smoke (they cannot be possibly smoking 24/7!), maybe they can smell your cooking etc which may be just as annoying? Maybe you should take it up with the land lord about the thin walls, but maybe if it bothers you you should move. We can all here our neighbours talk, play music, smell their cooking etc it's not always pleasant but it's hardly the end of the world.

They might be able to smell my cooking - but they havent expressed it is a problem (but then, i open the window and have the extractor fan on when cooking)

They know its an issue and dont bother trying to do anything about it - opening a window is hardly a lot of effort

Landlord wont do anything about thin walls - it's a Housing association house.

Why should i have to move because they wont open a window/be curtious - AND are doing something that goes against their tenancy agreement?

I havent said its the end of the world - I've said its annoying and i've had enough of it. Why should me and my kids have to put up with it?
  • Could you try having a word with the boys themselves not the mum if she's violent or volatile, you'll probably find the boys are a hell of a lot calmer!

I don't know what "spray" you're referring to, is there a special one? If it's just febreze, you can get that in poundland, I def think giving it to them is a good idea (if it's cheap) as I said stoners hate hassle and extra effort.

Otherwise just keep on at them, maybe shout through the wall if you can't get passed the mum, seems like they'll definitely hear you. You said that you asked once before and they opened the window for a week, it might take reminding them every week to get them into the habit.

Contact the landlord again and tell him that he either sorts it out by threatening the lad's waste of a space mother, or you will contact the Police.

It's worth pointing out to him that as a landlord he may be liable for prosecution because he has been made aware of drug use on one of his properties but has chosen to do nothing.

If nothing happens contact the Police and say that as well as being able to smell it coming through the walls there are lots of kids that appear to be school age as far as you can make out, and that you have told the landlord and he has told you he isn't bothered...that should perk up their interest. ;)
