cannabis

Is it illegal to smoke it in your house?

Normally I'm a "each to their own, do what they want in their own home" kinda person but next door has a teen, who has all his friends round in his room, they all smoke (windows closed) and the smell is seeping through the walls. You can smell it at the top of my stairs and in my bathroom. It's disgusting. I've tried speaking to them, and they start opening the windows for about a week but then its back to normal. Their mum shouts at them but doesn't do much else. Landlord doesn't care even though t&c said its not allowed in tenancy.

I don't want to play the "i have a kid and baby on way" card but I don't allow people to smoke in my house because I don't like it - so why should I put up with the smell.

Mentioned to them there was the air spray they could buy (suggested on MSE a while back) but they aren't interested

"Allowing other people to use cannabis in your house or any other premises is illegal. If the police catch someone smoking cannabis in a club they can prosecute the landlord, club owner or person holding the party."

  • Hm will try again with police. When it all first started and I spoke to their mum she got violent and police was called. They said they could smell it but wouldn't do anything about it

Just sick of the smell :-(

My neighbours smokes, but outside in the back garden - they rent their house so I assume theyre not allowed to smoke inside or they dont want to have a stinking house.

Anyway, on the very odd occasion Ive gone into our bathroom and smelt a slight whiff of smoke, and I think its because theyve been outside in their garden and even though we have double glazing something must seep through a bit. So I would go mad if I could smell it as much as you can!
  • It's driving me crackers - I purposely don't have baths in the evening any more because of the smell :-( have people asking if they can use the toilet because I end up apologizing for the smell! Doesn't help walls are thin but they don't help the matter

DD has noticed it "smells funny" but obviously doesn't know why and its starting to really get on my nerves. Might try n speak to their mum again ..... was gonna buy the air freshener thing for them but why should I have to :-(
  • When it all first started their mum got violent and the police were called. What are you expecting her response to be this time? I wouldn't go near them.

Sounds to me that it is more of a nuisance issue: I would call your local environmental health officers for an opinion.

You can then talk through with them whether the police need to be involved.

I can imagine that you dont want a full on war with the neighbours, so I would resist the police involvement until you really want to roll out the big guns as that could get pretty difficult.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I sympathise with you i really do, before i moved, i lived in a block of flats and the neighbour below me used to smoke the stuff in their bedroom which was above my living room, so nice summer evenings we either had to sit and suffer with the windows closed or have the smell comming in the flat.

Agree with you about the police, they were not intereted in the user, they are more interested in the seller and the farms.

Glad i am away from all that now.

How old is the teen, perhaps he will be flying the nest soon.

    How about contacting their landlord?

If she got violent I'd be really worried about speaking to her again...
Time to move to a better neighbourhood? :-(
  • People who smoke cannabis, or take any other drug, are inherently selfish anyway so I wouldn't expect them to consider the fact that you have a baby on the way.

I can completely sympathise with you because the smell is absolutely awful I used to be embarassed to let anyone into my house in case they thought that I was smoking it.

In my experience, which I posted about a couple of years ago, my next door neighbour was not only smoking weed but also growing it and the Police did nothing.....I ended up moving.
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)

If the little shengis is sharing with friends that is possession with intent to supply. ie. dealing, whether he is making money on it or not.
The police should be taking action not turning a blind eye.
