Mine in Kingston is the same. It's the white middle class superior arrogant attitude endemic within Sainsburys which makes it so.

Out of interest, how does being middle class translate into waiting longer to check out?

No... less staff = less overheads = more profit

Our little one this morning is having serious problems with most of their tills.

    - 5 "self service" tills - all out of order
    - 2 manned tills - can't take card payments
    - 2 manned tills - working correctly

The queue goes all the way around the shop, and every time one of the 'can't take card payment' tills becomes available we have to chat along the line, asking "anyone paying with cash?". It takes me half an hour to walk to work in the morning, plus another 20 minutes to buy my breakfast :rotfl:

Indeed. I fail to see how a policy (if it is indeed that deliberate) which puts fewer staff on checkouts, one assumes to save money, has anything whatsoever to do with class.

When I used to work there they really panicked about queues and made sure they got more open, our store was really old too so it had short checkouts which made the queues look worse than they were.

I think as has been said it depends on the managers, our store manager was hot on keeping queues down although annoyingly wasn't till trained himself.

I would add B&Q to the list of stores with long queues, yesterday when I went in they had 2 checkouts open and the queues were 15 deep (no joke), its as if they have forgotten christmas is coming up.

They rely on staff being permanently on certain departments (bakery, clothing, kiosk, wines and spirits etc) and then being pushed over to tills 'until the rush is over' or to cover teabreak/lunch. You MUST be till trained to work anywhere within the store.

I never go there any more, I've been to the Hanley one a couple of times and frankly it's been hopeless, so I go over the road to the Tescos.

That sounds unlikely as it would mean they would not be able to use casual staff for, e.g. shelf stacking at busy times.

I've also heard tannoy announcements for 'any till trained staff to the checkouts, please', which would not make sense if all staff had to be till trained.

No you don't, they try to get as many people trained as possible, but not everyone has to be till trained. Plus some shop floor roles such as code checking and bakery take priority over checkouts, so even if staff are till trained they can't always be called off from those departments.

Maybe you've uncovered a conspiracy? Maybe they are all till trained but they want people to think there is some distinction so they can make the excuse that they are not till trained when it suits them? If that were the case 'any till trained staff to the checkouts, please' would be code for 'all staff to the checkouts, please'.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.
