Of course the argument could be made that if we've got to the point of expecting customers to work the tills themselves then it's reasonable to think that everyone can use the tills.
Judging by the pathetic efforts I see at those self service checkouts though I think that expectation is overly optimistic though. If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -

my friend who works at the checkout at Sainsbury's had to go though being till trained even though she has used self service checkouts in the past which took someone who could work the tills off them because she had to be watched all the time till they were confident with her0 -
The advantage with Sainsbury's is that they have self service tills with large checkout areas, so you can do a Big Shop(tm) just using self checkout, which is always faster than waiting at a proper till.0

I love our Sainsburys (it's a SavaCentre), we have fast track option (scan as you go round) self serve (both baskets and trolleys) and fabulous store supervisors / managers who keep an eye on all the queues and help people move into queues with no people in them or to open up new tills.
The staff are friendly, though I like the self serve and the staff on these rush around doing what they need.
I am also ok to queue or walk to a less busy till!!!0 -

Precisely my point. If all necessary staff were trained in various functions, including till-work, then my theory would work. Not only would the punters benefit but the staff would have a wider variety of work, making it less tedious at only working in one area.
Justin; as well as my fee this one's a Xmas bonus.0 -
Remember the average shelf stacker might not have enough nouse to be able to use a till!
Even with the self service tills you sometimes have to go looking for someone when they inevitably complain about something being wrong.0 -
What about if you spend 10 minutes doing your shopping and the queue is 5 deep?
But it's not really about people walking out. Few do this. If they did they would not let the queues get so long.
They can build quite quickly, you know.
You have that exactly wrong, don't you?
Nobody said that they were 'more special'.
It's about supermarkets treating all their customers badly by making it a policy to have so few staff on the checkouts that queues build to excessive levels during peak times. day in, day out. No reasonable person is going to object to queuing a little longer occasionally when they are unexpectedly busy.
Spot on! Which also makes it difficult to service the queues and by time they have more staff ready to serve people like the above poster have already abandoned trolleys0 -
Which magazine has just published the results of its best and worst supermarkets survey. Funnily enough, criticism of Sainsbury's includes 'never enough checkouts open'."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

In my experience Asda are extremely good at this. They even have people walking at the back of the tills directing people to where the queue is shortest.
My local Morrisons is absolutely hopeless. Always endless queues.0 -

and I am confident in my assumption that the green fleeced teen doing that job, proceeds to tell the people at the BACK of the queue (i.e. have been queueing for the shortest length of time) to go to a till which is being opened/with a shorter queue
Tell the person second in the queue, as they have been waiting longest!!!"We can all fly as high as the dreams we dare to live...........unless we are a chicken" ~ Anon.0
