Sainsbury's: PLEASE OPEN YOUR CHECKOUTS

It's worth saying that some people who work in stores dread going on the tills, especially at busy times when the public can be really rude.
In Asda a few weeks ago the familiar war cry of 'All queue busters to the checkouts please' went out. In the same isle as me were two female Asda employees who suddenly tried to look busy. I very helpfully said loudly "Hey, I've seen both of you working on the tills before, did you not hear that announcement? There are people waiting to be served! Chop chop!".
Funny enough they did not seem to thank me for bringing their attention to the announcement - in fact, if I did not know better, I think they may have been a bit cross with me........0 -
completely different to the Sainsburys I worked a week in
they were always putting people on tills even when it wasn't that busy
and yes you do have to be trained to use the tills0 -
Our local Sainsburys is also dreadful for not opening enough tills, even at the busiest times.0

I always found Morrisons terrible for this!
When I worked there as a student they would try and get people to be trained on the tills. I always refused - the till staff supervisors were nasty and rude, and my friend worked on tills and hated it. They would put the call out and people would ignore it.0 -
The idea at JS is when the queues reach a set level new checkouts are opened up but there are times when its not possible to do this eg late night as majority of checkout trained staff have gone home so the only staff are the youngsters with a supervisor and/ or the c/o manager. A previous JS store i worked at the manager must have been given a budget for checkout out staff as the checkouts were short on just checkout staff.0

We did the same at a previous JS store i worked at, well not really ignore it but we would fix our breaks so only 1 of us was left on the dept(was store policy for member of staff to be on the dept) when it was busy(managed to work out when it was busy)0 -
Keighley Sainsburys was dire one day last week. I imagine they are trying to cut costs after finding themselves competing with a new Asda practically next door
.
They should take a leaf out of the successful Keelham Farm Stores a few miles up the road. This place knocks the socks off any of the supermarkets. Their tills are always fully staffed and the staff are efficient and friendly. Moreover their fruit and veg is a fraction of the supermarket price.0 -
I think this is part of a general move towards self service checkouts across the board.
However I will start using those tills when the supermarkets concerned start paying me for doing their work for them.0 -
My local Sainsbury's is exactly the same, queue management doesn't seem to figure very highly in their priorities
Absolutely spot on, the one where I live in Chester is terrible, they simply do not have enough people on the tills, so frustrating. Can someone forward them a copy of this thread?0 -
I hate self checkouts it puts people out of jobs, problem I have is our local Waitrose where they have a customer service / flower desk who pick and choose when they will take the overflow of queues, on at least one occassion the girl has refused to serve saying she was busy, yet was in fact filing her nails! Manager is never around, and stock control is non existant, bread out of date and empty shelves on many product lines.
Can see a time when it will be all self service, and a bit like the old days of Kwik Save, just the stock dumped in boxes you have to open yourself! My Mind wanders, if found please return.0
