Sainsbury's: PLEASE OPEN YOUR CHECKOUTS

Is this just a localised phenomina, but each time I go to my local supersized Sainsbury's, the queues are usually 3+ deep and only 5-10 of the 40 checkouts are open?
I left a trolley full of stuff in there last night and just walked out in disgust. I'd never see this kind of disregard for customers in Asda (but I'd never see Sainsbury's quality in there either.....)
Please tell me this is a local issue and it's not like it everywhere in the UK?

It depends on where 'local' is - I've experienced the same, but it might be the same branch as you (Hanley) ! I very rarely go in Sainsbury's, but we went on Saturday morning because we saw an offer for a couple of things we wanted. Less that half of the checkouts were open, with big queues forming. They did appeal for all till-trained staff to go to the checkouts, but I didn't see anyone do so while we were there.
Awful store, I won't be back in a hurry.....0 -

Nope, it's not Hanley, so I suspect this is not isolated :-(
What a pity. Nice products, nice stores - just lousy service.
Here are 4 open checkouts 3-5 deep.
All those empty chairs whilst people queue 4 deep +0 -
Nope certainly not alone!!! Its the same with the big one up here in Aberdeen!!! its terrible and i try to avoid if possible!!! They usually have a bout 5 of the 12 tills or so open and dont seem to make any effort to cut the queues down!!! ..whereas i used to work for M&S and if there was even a slight indication ofa queue forming , they would get someone to open up another till...many times we had all our tills open and still queues but at least they tried!!5lb a Month Challenge 2012:j
Be happy! Beauty is both inside & Out!0 -
You go at a "Quiet" time, and they only have 1/2 checkouts open.0

I'd be happy if it were a 'quiet time' but I'd take the view any evening in December wouldn't really qualify as that.
I'd also be happy if they only had half the checkouts open, rather than 4 out of 40-50.
All that said, regardless of the time I'm in Asda, if footfall increases they don't let the queues get to 4 or 5 deep before opening other checkouts. Personally I think it just shows contempt for your customers.
I don't think I've experienced it with Tesco, Waitrose or Morrisons either. It certainly seems to be a Sainsbury's phenomina and I'm glad I'm not going mad, or alone in noticing it.0 -
My local Sainsbury's is exactly the same, queue management doesn't seem to figure very highly in their priorities0

Maybe it's a store by store thing or depends on the store manager.. My local JS has never gone above 2 or 3 deep and has at least 2/3 of the tills open during typical shopping hours. In fact, the till supervisor sometimes actively manages the queues; inviting people to change queues when another is opened or is moving faster. (They look really confused when I decline though...)I need to think of something new here...0

Mine in Kingston is the same. It's the white middle class superior arrogant attitude endemic within Sainsburys which makes it so.0
