  • Hi all.
First post so please be kind!
We are currently in the process of buying a Dell Laptop with Windows Vista Premium.
Will the free programs listed earlier (i.e ZoneAlarm,AVG,Adaware,Spybot S+D etcc) work okay with The Vista system?

I have quite a large hosts file. (1.75 MB) (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc)

As it's so large I have to make changes to XP system or XP would not work.

What does the host file do?

If something tried to go from my computer to "007guard.com" all it would do is stop at address "127.0.0.1" which is just my computer so it can't go out on the net.

I use norton firewall and anti virus.

I also run various spyware programs some free some paid for and rotate them around. some catch things others do not.

And I have a router that has ports blocked.

I have never been infected with anything in 10 years on the net so I guess I am doing something right.

Read Martin's article on free security. Or you can read this thread. Or failing that you could even google for them. Most of the stuff mentioned is free and legal to download.

I am in the same situation as yourself. I have looked at the websites of the free programs listed above and found most of them are compatible with Vista. However my dell will be coming with a 36 months free McAfee which i might just use till Vista service pack 1 comes out and hopefully iron out many issues. Then i will restore the laptop to factory setting to wipe off mcafee and then install the free programs listed above. As it happens i currently use the above free programs on my current xp home laptop without any problems.
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

Does that mean you've switched off your Mac Firewall? How do you prevent infection from in the wild viruses such as the MacOS/Leap.A?

With the increased popularity in Apple and hence Macs, it would be stupid to assume that the Mac will not become a target in the near future. Its only a matter of time before Mac will need AV and Anti-Spyware software...
