Avast seems to have a problem. It found a trojan on my computer alledgedly infecting my Outpost firewall. I could not get rid of it and had to call an expert in (which cost me!) and he eventually, after installing AVG, came to the conclusion that there was no trojan except in the mind of Avast. I now use AVG and, touch wood, have had no trouble to date.

    5) planning to build a small stand alone pc and installing a free firewall called Smoothwall. It's a DOS run program, so a very small harddisk is only required and does not need windows (but you can use Windows and any internet browser to access and change it's configuration). The idea is, because it's a DOS program and does not use Windows, it's more secure. Down side is that two network cards are needed, but there are cheap these days.

Smoothwall is a Linux application, it is definately NOT a DOS application, not sure where you got that info from?

I'm just wondering, what kind of practical improvement would be achieved by installing the entire ZA suite as per this trialpay offer, compared to leaving things alone?

In my case, ZA free / AVG Free & sundry free anti-spyware anti-malware detectors are all working fine.

Anybody else on this thread / board had experience of the ZoneAlarm Suite?

    Just got my first laptop :j :j :j :j :j .
Have only ever used work's computers before.

Terrified      to start using it before I've got my security in place, but have no idea where to start.

Have read Martin's info. on security and have studied this thread at length and now my brain's fit to burst!

I'm starting from scratch - haven't even taken the laptop out of its box yet so is there anyone out there kind enough to tell me how and what security to get in place?

Should I just buy in a package - even though I've heard that they are not totally effective; or (my preferred option) should I try to put together a free D.I.Y. package?

Can anyone give me any help??? Any advise will be very gratefully received.

Also what do I do afterwards to keep my security up to date? How often should I be using virus checkers etc.
My laptop has come with Windows Vista already installed, but there doesn't seem to be a Vista manual in the box. Is this normal??

There really are "more questions than answers".

I'm not sure anyone could explain it more simply than Martin's articles. You want one firewall (whether you want to use inbuilt one or use a different one depends), one anti virus, and maybe two or three anti-spyware/adware. Also you may want to post a new thread with your problem rather than adding it to a sticky.

The Vista manual is on the disc, as far as I'm aware.

Anyways, I use no security, as I don't visit silly websites, nor do I use the ever-so-popular-with-teeny-girls Limewire, it's riddled with viruses and other junk.

All I have is common sense. Virus free..forever.

I hope you still use a firewall as it's irrelevant to what your browsing habits are. Even the most die hard non anti virus users still strongly advocate a decent firewall and I hope you're also keeping windows up to date. A gneral sweeping statement of using no security does cover an awful lot of stuff and I presume you are meaning specific apps such as AV and antispyware. Luis Villazon, technology writer for PC Format and others, recently gave a compelling argument for safe internet use and no need for AV software but he still said you need a good firewall and occasionally run a free online checker. Almost by definition if you don't scan your pc you won't find any virus. Not finding a virus is not the same statement as there is no virus.
