Avast is actually pretty good but in my PC using days I always swore by AVG.0
-
I am currently using:-
Norton Internet Security 2007
SpySweeper 5.3
Yes they are paid for but I haven't had a Virus, Trojans in Years and Ive tried the free online scanners to test my system and they all come back negative.
Spyware gets blocked before getting on to my computer with Spysweeper as its realtime protection which you dont get on the free versions.
I back this up with Ad-Aware free version and also use Firefox browser, set to clear all data when I exit.0 -
AVG now does a free rootkit detector, type in AVG rootkit into google and there should be a link to download it.0

Can I thank those on this forum that suggested that AVG could slow down computers.
Mine has been running like a pig for the last month or so, today I removed AVG and replaced it with Avast and it is running fine again. TBH it was fine before the latest edition (7.5) was introduced and for a while afterwards. I just hope Avast does the job.0 -
My Avast seems to do agreat job. It has just informed me that a Trojan Win32:Lineage-518 has infected an Agnitum Outpost Firewall file Spy6_main.sdb. I had trouble in quarantining the file and am not sure if it has been done. The Virus chest shows a virus
Win32: Adware-gen (ADW), which is not the one that it previously informed me.
This is all foreign ground to me as I have never been infected with a Trojan before. I have emailed Agnitum and asked for their advice.0 -

It;s not very MSE to buy a computer, subscribe to broadband and then lock the computer in a room so no one can use it.:rotfl:0 -
I use,
1) Router built in firewall
2) Comodo firewall pro (free)
3) Microsoft firewall
4) Avast anit-virus (free and the best, good for rebooting the pc and checking for viruses before anything is loaded, e.g. - Windows)
5) planning to build a small stand alone pc and installing a free firewall called Smoothwall. It's a DOS run program, so a very small harddisk is only required and does not need windows (but you can use Windows and any internet browser to access and change it's configuration). The idea is, because it's a DOS program and does not use Windows, it's more secure. Down side is that two network cards are needed, but there are cheap these days.0 -
Neildonn,
You can have too much of a good thing! You don't need more than the router firewall which should stop anything trying to get IN to your network, and either the Comodo or Microsoft firewall on the PC.
I know nothing about the Comodo one as I haven't used it, but the Microsoft one is considered a "last resort" firewall... only there if you haven't got anything else to use.
Having 2 software firewalls on one PC can cause problems unless carefully set up (and even then there's just no need for more than 1) so I'd turn off the Windows one.
Avast is OK, but has a strange clunky GUI, and seems to be beaten in most comparative tests by AVG's free AV, so you may want to consider changing to that.
I tried a setup using smoothwall too on an old Pentium PC and it worked very well... however I was only testing it out of curiosity as I have a hardware firewall in my router too so didn't need another one. If you really want to use smoothwall, make sure you turn off the router's firewall, or place your entire network in a DMZ, and port everything to your PCs via the smoothwall box.
Seems a lot of work to me though...Te audire no possum. Musa sapientum fixa est in aure.0
