youneed tomake sure your virus cheker is updated and do a full scan.
The upshot was that eventually after doing a check on the Agnitum files his AVG virus checker could find nothing wrong. He deleted the two alledgedly infected files and I am hoping that all is now well. I shall find out when I update Agnitum firewall and do another virus check.
Funnily enough when I entered the Trojan name into google it came up with 142 hits from around the world, and one in the UK had also had the virus attached to the same Agnitum file which had replicated several times. I hope she has had her problem resolved.
Also I have now got Spybot search and destroy and Ad-Aware SE Personal which my tame expert loaded for me, bless 'im.:A. Mind you it all cost me £40 :eek:0 -
Working in IT and working on security issues at work, other areas of the puter and network are tied down, but using a Linksys router with built-in firewall, and Norton Antivirus Corporate version.
Occasionally run Hijack this, sybot and adaware.
Tips are:
Ditch internet explorer completely
Use advert and flash blocking plugins
Turn off scripting, except for sites that are trusted - another browser handles these sites, to save turning it off and on
HOSTS file with more than 15,000 entries to block/redirect known nasty and ad-serving sites
Useless services disabled
Weekly backups of important stuff onto DVD
'Now and then' backups of files onto spare 200Gb hard drive that dont change much, but dont want to lose - music, movies, pictures.
I dont agree with tons of software running at one time, and just make sure everything is running as it should. Use various tools to check any compromises, and having been clean for a good 18 months, removed all software apart from norton

No actually JasonW is right. Norton Corporate Edt is actually extremely good and amongst the top for detection rates its well regarded in the IT world.
For some peculiar reason, their consumer range seems to be sub-par, which is why I can understand the reasoning with regards to your comment.Lack of money is the root of all evil.

I know this thread is about what we have installed, but reading through these posts raises questions, if it is not appropriate to ask on here please re-direct me :-)
One post says that Mcafee, spybot and microsoft are not sufficient, these are what I have. I pay aol on a monthly basis for providing McAfee. Even after installing the best available to protect our pc, I am under the impression that nothing can prevent hacking?
I am not experiencing any day to day problems but want to protect my pc from all eventualities.
I have reason to believe that my computer was hacked into recently to obtain my name address & telephone number. What steps can you suggest to remedy this situation, as I do not know what other personal information the hacker was able to access, and perhaps can continue to access. I have changed all passwords previously used ( except this site ) run various scans and made sure my protection is updated. All suggestions welcome.if i had known then what i know now0 -
What makes you think you have been hacked? Do you have a firewall installed, or a router, are windows updates turned on in control panel security center?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Am baffled by earlier posts about AVG Free.
Mine's the free edition and updates itself automatically whenever I'm on line.
I've experienced no slow-down of either my laptop nor PC, but that's very likely the luck of the draw -- 's funny how some computers get affected and others don't (and all quite beyond my 'umble comprehension.)0 -

It's a long story that I don't want to go into here, but will post associated concerns under the appropriate thread (dubious types of selling) someone (know who) rang me and let me know that they had my name, address and obviously my tel. no. which I can only assume they obtained from my email address, which they had seen online - yes I know, I know :-/ but it was accidently shown instead of a username. That is all they had to go on, so it would seem obvious, to me anyway, that they had hacked into that to get my personal info, wouldn't it? Willing to be contradicted here, but how else? Would my firewall prevent hacking? Can you recommend a proof positive one?
Thanks for responding. :-)
Also, with regard to codger's posting, I started to try out the free check up of zonealarm but it wanted me to unsub from my current one to complete installation and I chickened out at that point , as it was only a 15 day free trial and I wasn't sure how to re-install my current one. so it is only half installed, nevertheless, my computer has slowed down considerably :-(if i had known then what i know now0 -
If the email address gave away your name, and something else gave away your location, it is pretty easy to get the rest of the info, unless you are called smith.
All you can do is make sure your av is upto date, make sure firewall is on, and run independent checks for viruses and malware, using bitdefender free, avg antispyware, avg anti rootkit, lavasoft adaware etc.. all of those are free.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
brass -- hope everything works out OK for you.
As Art says, AVG Free automatically updates itself, and where the slowdown's concerned, I haven't had one (fingers crossed.)
Your mention of ZA reminds me though that 18 months or so ago I updated my then ZA to a new version and everything went wrong, made a snail look like an Olympic athlete, so I had to uninstall and find a previous version.
I've been wary of ZA updates ever since but was reassured by other users that the most recent version was fine, so I updated to that and yes, they were right. . . Except in another forum elsewhere I read of someone blaming a sudden slowdown in their PC on having installed the latest version of ZA.
Sometimes, pen and ink still seems attractive. Or even my old black Remington typewriter!0
