I think you've hit the nail on the head with this statement. Almost all paid AV solutions automatically update every day or so, taking the onus off the user to remember this. My parent-in-law's PC has AVG Free installed, and every time I go round there I have to manually update it because they forget to do it. This can sometimes leave them several weeks out of date. If I could get them to fork out a few quid to get a paid package I would, but they (being computer and internet illiterate) don't see the benefit. I do maintain backups for them, but I haven't told them this... one day they'll come in handy I'm sure, and then I'll be in line for loads of brownie points.
Most computers have a calendar installed. Like me all they have to do is schedule a weekly "Update Security & Run" memo and problem solved!:D

Clearly you don't know my parent's in law... ;) They leave anything that pops on the screen for when I come round as "we didn't know what to do with it".

It's not like I haven't told them how and when to do the update. My post should have actually said:

On the odd time I found they have remembered, they haven't got a clue how to... (They say "we were going to update it, but could you just remind us how again...") AAaargh!

I use Bitdefender security suite, very cheap, for the first year its about £20 odd then you get a discount in the second year. I am always on the internet and emailing and have never had a virus or any problems at all. I just use windows firewall. I run adaware once a week and occassionally spybot.
At work I have Norton which I dont like as much, my PC came with McAfee which I really dont like at all, I found it messed up my computer and I had to go right into computer to remove it completly, not easy for someone who is not that technically minded.

Aaah Lexis200, I had to laugh. I do sympathise am in same situation, and am frequently banging head off brick wall. Uninstalled Norton and put in AVG as computer was running very slow a couple of months back, all going nicely....then, "your brother put the new version of Norton in, and now computer is running really slow, can you look at it? " Why do I bother?

Last year I got rid of Norton and installed ad-aware, AVG, Kerio and spybot. And I un CCleaner every day. The others I run at least once a week.

I would be worried about running Onecare... almost every test I've seen gives it REALLY bad marks for detection and repair rates. If you really want to continue with it, I'd run one of the online scanners as well once a week. Personally though, I'd ditch it and get AVG free... better to have lost £11 than all your files.

The problem with paid for anti virus software is that you are then hooked on paying for updates to that software. It is essential to update anti virus software or the latest viruses will just bypass the anti virus. My AVG free version updates every morning or when I turn the computer on. So it is free to install and free to use. It also does an excellent job at removing viruses.

Another danger with some trial anti virus software is that if you remove them they will constantly give you pop-ups inviting you to upgrade. I tried a trial version of anti virus from Computer Associates on one of my computers and now I constantly get pop-ups inviting me to upgrade.

I moved recently from Norton AV to Mcafee. Mcafee works better against trojans.

Not necessarily. I found McAfee to be worse at detecting trojans than the free AVG. McAfee and Norton are pretty much on a par in the lab comparisons and a re outperformed by some of the free apps.
