Seems like a lot of hassle. Why not stick with AVG? It's as good as Norton and uses less resources.

I agree, the free AVG is certainly on a par with the likes of Norton for virus detection (and some argue that it's better), it just doesn't have the bells and whistles of the big players. Personally, I prefer to mix and match the software anyway as I'm not sure any company can do as good a job as a specialist company dealing in just one aspect of PC security.
I'm surprised your PC isn't groaning at the seams with all the excess rubbish that Norton puts on your PC, especially as each new version will need different DLLs and the like.
For the record, I use

I use - AVG free - Spywareblaster - Spybot - Windows Firewall, router. That is all you need, with a bit of personal vigilance on your pc, e-mails, downloads. Browsers all set to delete cookies & temp files on exit except for specified sites. There is a lot of hype with security ! Since windows updates all seem to be verification tools to check your xp key & not much else, the last M$ update I did was SP2 from the cd. Don't get me wrong, my copy is perfectly legal but a line has to be drawn to these companies that take the control away from you & treat you as a criminal until proven otherwise. Norton, McAffe are another prime example of companies that mess with your pc & take control. Oh yeah my pc is fine and I have not had any problems for years !
Except it takes 2 hrs to shut down and i am continually bombarded with pop ups, my credit cards have all been used in Timbucktoo to buy weapons from the Taliban- ha ha (joke)Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -
Last year I upgraded my security to McAfee Security Suite package for two PCs but its new format is killing my b/f's laptop. Prior to the upgrade, his machine was perfectly adequate for the little time he spends online.
The upgrade is just about to expire and my Mum has asked me to add her into the package, her machine is also not an up to the minute model, so I am keen to see if anything else out there is going to be better and less system hungry?
Both PC's are Pentium III running XP Home. My PC is Pentium 4 running XP Pro.
ThanksThanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
