    I currently have:

    Sophos Antivirus
    Adaware
    Spybot search and destroy

I have the Windoew firewall enabled but I think I should get another one...can anybody suggest a good, free one? If I install a new one do I have to disable the Windows firewall?

Slightly off-topic, when you uninstall software some of it gets left behind. Is there any "safe" free software out there to remove these bits?

ZoneAlarm is a good firewall and it's free.
Also, have a look at EasyCleaner or Eusing registry Cleaner. Both are free and do a good job.

Put the names into Google and you will find download sites that you can go to.

    Regards,

Whatever antivirus software you use on your PC, it's always a good idea to get a second opinion from time to time... try Trend Micro's online scanner at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (pick the java based kernel, which should run on just about all PCs) which check for viruses, trojans and other nasties. You can run it in conjunction with existing AV as it's a one off scan. The best bit is it cleans anything it finds as well... most online scanners are just that, scanners... you have to buy the software to get the cleaner functions.

    just to add my twopenneth:

    Until recently used:
Trend Micro PC-cillin - was great, non-intrusive and always scored well in tests, but stopped me playing my fave poker site unless I turned the firewall off completely :-(((
    Microsoft AntiSpyware
    Ad-aware free
    Spybot
    SpywareBlaster

    Now (since Jan 07):

Windows firewall - can play poker again ;-))
    AVG free
Windows Defender with real-time switched ON
    Ad-Aware free
    Spybot S&D
    CCleaner
...and have had no problems at all..whoopee !!

To concur with Lexis above, I recon it's a good idea to use a reputable on-line scanner every now & again, like Trend or Panda.

Also, I prefer non-intrusive software. After helping out friends with McAfee and Norton, no way would I ever go with either of them, they were awful !!

I've never been a fan of the Panda software, it only ever seems to get mediocre results in comparitive tests. See here http://www.pcpro.co.uk/shopper/labs/230/anti-virus-software/products.html for a good article and test of the major AV solutions out there, also look at http://www.av-comparatives.org/ for a more in depth set of results. The top ones seem to be NOD32 or Kaspersky (although the Steganos package is basically the same as the Kaspersky one but cheaper so go for that if you want to save money).

Well its important to have antivirus and firewall software. the minimum i have is windows xp firewall and grisoft free anivirus. But for the last 12 months i just keep signing up for free trials of software.

i had a 90day trial of norton 2006, then just as it run out i downloaded norton 2007 90day trial.

i do think the paid for software does seam to work better, i recieved a virus in a spam email this week and as soon as it downloaded microsoft onecare sprang to life warning me.

So i hope free trials keep coming.......im sure norton 2008 will be out soon :)

So I presume you are uninstalling AVG each time you want to use a trial such as Norton?
