What Security do you use?

Just spotted your reply Browntoa - thanks - favourited it to find easily later for a good looksee.

What is 32 bit Vista? Don't know if that is what I am or no. I have a basic Packard Bell pc - with just the basic Vista on it (not Premium or anything). Is that 32 bit? Dont know what is meant by ...bit.

(its a Packard Bell PB1379 bought at Currys! if thats any help)

Now trying the Beta of ESET's venture into the firewall/antispyware/Anti Virus market.. Shaping up excellent and has practically no impact on system rescources or startup times. Easy to use interface and operates excellent as a firewall. Tested using a DMZ on my router and running various port scans from the likes of Symantec. Results all show it is secure. Still in early BETA but with the same scan engine as NOD32 then it is one I definately will be buying when it goes final.

I thought Norton Internet Security 2008 was going to be the one to watch because they had drastically reduced the load times and system rescources used but ESET blows it completely away.

Just a quickie for those out there far more knowledgable than I am. Amongst a small number of protection freewares running on this PC, I have Spyware Terminator Live Shield. It's definitely worked (intercepted a nasty a few months back) and has proved itself in scanning mode, when it's picked up stuff missed even by aSquared.

An earlier post on here mentioned Snoopfree Privacy Shield. But as one of the problems with PC ownership is that paranoia can so easily set in -- you wind up with far more protective software than you'll ever need -- would it be the case that one "shield" is more than enough, and that using Spyware Terminator and Snoopfree would be over-kill?

Linux Apart from the firewall on the router and checking what I download thats it Virus free for as long as I've owned this computer! (It started out with Win95 if that tells you how old it is!)

i use adware and spybot (S&D) then i had the great idea to use spyware doctor which turned out to be the worst idea i have ever had. i have a windows vista (compaq) laptop which i decided to use spyware doctor to deal with the usual Spyware, Adware, Spyware Trojans, Popups and Bad Websites but every time i run a full system scan, my laptop simply shuts down and reboot itself with the screen becoming blue saying "an error have occurred making windows to shut down" .

i though at first it was a virus but i have tried 3 times and the same thing happened that is why i am planning to take spyware doctor off my laptop.

i have been using computers for a long time now. iv tried many different securities but i have found AVG internet security to be the best - easily as good as norton. norton takes up a lot of a computer CPU and processor speed, it costs and can be quite complicated. my advice is to install AVG instead. its a simple program, easy to use, no subcription messages or adware with it and its completely free. it can be set to do a daily scan of your computer, constantly checking for viruses and it checks for updates daily, which it regularily updates by installing them itself. plus these checks are done in a low CPU usage state (meaning it wont drmatically cripple your computer, like Norton does!)

Also my best advice is to stop using internet explorer. its rubbish. Did you ever get a 'System 32' error message? thats internet explorer crap. only use it for stuff it has to be used for (e.g. Hotmail account viewing) for absolutely everything else use the browsre mozilla firefox. it has the same basic layout as internet explorer but it has an automatic popup blocker. You can also choose to add other features to it called addons, but its up to you!

We've discussed both AVG and Firefox many times in this thread. Both are excellent programmes and both free. To compliment Firefox use Thunderbird as your mail server as well. It's from the makers of Firefox and is excellent.

Agreed! I'm ex-Norton / ex-McAfee; AVG has never let me down, nor messed up my various PCs. However. . . whilst on the subject of "what security do you use?", might I quickly flag up this link:

I'm a Windows Secrets subscriber (before that, it was Fred Langa's LangaList) and time and again, the weekly newsletter has proved invaluable.

The above link relates to an invitation WS subscribers received last month to have their PCs scanned to establish just how good our basic "housekeeping" is.

The results are surprising. . . and I'm as guilty as many another WS subscriber, because though it's all right, banging on about this or that security software, that doesn't excuse being lazy when it comes to critical patches.

Hopefully no-one else here has been as daft as me in leaving at least one door partly open when I thought it was firmly locked. . .
