Before installing any other anti-virus/firewall packages you will need to remove Norton. Details can be found here.

  • I use:

McAfee Firewall, VirusScan, Privacy Service and Spam Killer (Spam Killer only needed for IE) - permanent
    Microsoft Firewall Turned OFF
    Spyware Blaster - permanent
Adware - Run by script at shutdown
Spybot - as and when, just in case.
AOL Spyware Checker - as and when, just in case.
AOL Email - Excellent virus checking and spam filter

    My 2 pennies worth.....

Why do people use Norton? I have so many friends and family who have been forced to use it because it was already installed or because it is so aggressively advertised by PC World etc and they are non the wiser. They all complain that their PC is slow and as soon as I advise them to get something else it speeds up no end!
I personally think that McAfee is worth every penny. I have never had a virus or hacker problem the whole time I have used it, and I do visit all sorts of websites whistling.gif

    And....

I know I use AOL, and I know many people will wonder why, but I have NEVER had a problem with it. Their email is excellent, I have never had a connection problem problem in 4 years (and I use it nearly every day) and it is just as usable as IE and other browsers (it uses IE as a base for itself. If you change your version of IE, AOL will change itself in some ways as well)

I agree gingerman. I got rid of norton from both my lappies and installed:

    AVG
    spybot
    ad-aware
sygate - now removed and replaced by Kerio
    ccleaner.

Both lappies run faster and are protected just as efficiently, for free!

    :)

    HELP! Today I've downloaded:

    AVG Antivirus
    Ewido
    Ashamppo firewall
    Cralwer parental controls

all to replace my soon to expire Norton package. However, the computer now freezes solid half way through the boot up and I cannot do anything to even investigate why. What should I do?

I had the same problem but got over it by uninstalling Norton completely and then reinstalling the new progs. After that everything worked fine.

    Regards,
    Art.

That is what I did and everything runs fine now! Thanks. I agree about NORTON, it does make the PC run slow! I won't miss it.
