I've read this thread through till my head's whirling. Can someone give me 'non-technical advice'

I've always used Norton or McAfee internet security, but existing McAfee Internet Security subscription is coming to an end.

    I have the following:

    Windows Firewall
    AVG Free Anti-Virus
    Ad-Aware Personal
    Windows Defender Beta 2

My computer accesses the internet through a shared router, which I think, also has a firewall.

What else do I need, keeping to the basics. I use the net for e-mail, banking shopping and getting information, but don't do gaming, downloading music,
    video, etc.

    Hope someone can advise. Thanks

There has been a new release of the free version of AVG.
It's also got a better looking interface which looks much more professional.

    Download it from:

Windows Defender is only a beta version so it's not fully functional yet. Also there is talk in the US that once it is up and running Microsoft will be charging for it. Why pay for it if there are free progs available.

One that you might like to look at is Spybot Search and Destroy. It's an excellent program for getting rid of spyware.

You might want to add Spybot Search and Destroy which is an excellent program for getting rid of spyware.

Also see my previous post about AVG. There's a new update available if you haven't got it already.

Thanks Art. I'll look at Spybot. Meanwhile while updating the AVG I also downloaded AVG's new free Spyware program. Quick query though, do I have to set up AVG Anti Virus in some way to check Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer, or does it check these automatically. I have selected the automatic update option.

How about firewall? Is Windows own firewall adequate?
  • I've mentioned it before, but the best 46 freeware utilities site is well worth looking at. Someone posted it in these forums a while ago, and it's a great site.

AVG & Avast are still there. Defender is a good bet but the latest advice is that Spybot and Ad-Aware are being bypassed by more sophisticated malware.

Have a regular look at the site to keep yourself up to date.

  • I have just renewed my Norton anti virus software it includes a spyware programme, unfortunately it do not include Norton firewall.
I use to use Norton firewall until a few days ago, as I needed to renew the software I have decided to use the one built into Windows XP, to be honest I don't feel really safe with it.

Reading this thread, a lot of people are going for a router with a firewall built in. I only have the one PC and have no need to communicate with another PC.

I am with AOL, could someone recommend a router that will work with AOL and as a good firewall built in, or some other means of using an electronic firewall?

    Thanks.

If you only have one pc you don't need a router. Even if you had a router with a built in firewall, it's not the same thing as a software firewall which you should always have installed on your pc. Windows firewall isn't sufficient and most people would recommend zonealarm. Unfortunately you've renewed your Norton subscription but nowadays there's no good reason to pay for really good security software. I've not paid for any type of security software in many years. All legal and I've found they work far better and more efficiently than any pc I've come across that has had paid software installed.
