Eset protection against malware infection, as per av-test.org
Windows 8 - 97%
Windows 7 - 94%
Windows XP - 97%
Pretty good, but hardly "absolutely bulletproof".0 -
I'm using Avast antivirus in my PC.
Really a great security software for viruses.0 -
I’m using MSE at the moment but I’ve recently received a message that support for Windows XP will end shortly and eventually MSE support as well which is a shame.
The reason I started using MSE originally was because it was one of the recommended free anti-virus packages recommended by this Martin Lewis page, and I must say that it has worked quite well.Trying to learn something new every day.0 -

Last I saw, the MSE definitions on Windows XP will keep being updated for another year after XP support ends.

They seem to like Kaspersky, but amongst the free products, AVG scores better for protection than Avast, and Panda seems to be even better (but slower).
On last one I switched from AVG to Avast about 2 years ago as AVG slowed everything down so much.
Is this still the case? Which software gives decent protection AND lets you keep working at a decent speed?0 -
I use the free version of Bitdefender on my Win 7 laptop currently, having recently changed from Comodo's free internet security suite. Both are very good and had no measurable effect on the speed of my system.
Bitdefender uses the same virus engine as it's fully paid version which in itself regularly tops, along with the paid for version of Kaspersky, the independent tests done by the two independent testing sites www.av-test.org and www.av-comparatives.org0 -
Thanks. av-test looks interesting, though no analysis of impact on laptop performance, while av-comparatives is just a website for sale, with ads.0

Must have been a problem with the link I posted for av-comparatives, try this http://www.av-comparatives.org/
it opens the site ok for me.0
