Is linux immune to privilege escalation exploits?
No they exist a a proof of concept, here's an interesting article, I don't think we have seen one in the wild yet.

Other than the SPI firewall in my draytek router and Little Snitch mainly used to stop Apps calling out, than things getting in.
No AV as I use Mac... well Hackinitosh iATKOS ML2 10.8.5 soon to be a Mavericktosh. If I start feeling insecure I might pop Sophos AV on... Just kidding hahahaha!
Today I have done battle with the Cryptlocker ransomware on a Windows 7 box and won, recovering all of the encrypted files using shadow explorer, so one happy customer. I then proceeded to remove AVG 8.5 yup that is NOT a typo, installed Malwarebytes (Paid for) CCleaner Business (Paid for) and Webroot AV I then told them to buy a Mac.0 -

After using the Online Armour free firewall for many years it began to cause problems (seriously delaying my pc boot-up) so I recently switched to Comodo. This has been great so far. It does have a large on screen rather than a toolbar icon but it sits in the background and you get used to it after a while. It also only updates every now and again, but so far this has not caused any issues.
Other than that I scan weekly with these free programs:
Malwarebytes
Auslogistics Registry Cleaner
CC Cleaner
Microsoft Security Essentials
I also have Trusteer Rapport which I was offered years ago by Santander. Whilst I do have issues with my pc running slowly (I am out in the sticks as well), I can honestly say I've never really had any major security problems, and I'm still using Internet Explorer.:D0 -
The antivirus program i select on two criteria
1. Antivirus program may not slowdown system speed.
2. It is capable of recognizing the even the most complex and newly invented Malware.0 -

I also use this for banking for extra peace of mind.0 -
A tip: Avoid Bitdefender at all costs. The software is buggy and causes blue screens and problems viewing video and the support is the worst in the known universe. It also installs adware on your computer - and I'm talking about the paid version. Terrible! After my mistake I'm going back to Kaspersky. Not perfect but unobtrusive and does a good job.0
