    This strategy doesn't work anymore.

Google figures for the first week June:-

Legitimate sites compromised to host malware – 37,000
Sites set up for the sole purpose of infection – 4,000

Which means that nine out of ten malware infections came from compromised legitimate sites rather than so called dodgy ones.
This week you can add Twitter, the New York Times and even Google (albeit in Palestine) to the list of compromised legitimate sites:

I have added avast securiity and anti theft to my Nook- seems pretty good so far, I have prey on my android phone but I would have needed to upgrade to pro to get the full prey anti - theft running on the nook..

Am I the only one that feels that Microsoft Security Essentials and being smart about browsing is enough? As long as you keep the OS and AV up to date then unless you take risks like clicking dodgy email links, you're fine.

If I was concerned about a virus I'd probably recommend Malwarebytes, using autoruns to check for any autorunning apps and the McAfee Stinger tool which I've used effectively before.

Just staying off dodgy sites keep the PC doctor at bay :D

unfortunately that is not the case as many legitimate sites can and will be high jacked not to mention the amount of fake emails that are sent out, your computer needs to have protection but I will say security for your PC should be free I use AVG Free edition, Spybot search and destroy, Malwarebytes anti-malware and Zone alarm (firewall) free edition these items are all free and are more secure than programs like Norton Security which will cost you.
Avast Security I have found good for phones and tablets but would not advise as your main antivirus protection as there updates are a little bit slow which is fine for mobile devices as virus's are not as well structured (ie they are newer platforms so not as strongly programmed for) on them platforms as they are on windows.
same reason why there are less virus's out their programmed to target OS X and Linux.

It's easier to just use Linux... can't remember the last time I had a virus (apart from purposely installing them in a VM).

You just need common sense, and one AV like Avast, and possibly if you know you have a virus Malwarebytes.

    Microsoft Security Essentials.
Had it for years now. Don't understand why people think they need more? Unless you aim to go on dodgy sites :P

As has been reiterated over & over in this thread/section recently, you don't need to visit "dodgy" sites to be infected. Perfectly legitimate and otherwise reputable sites are often targeted & compromised to point to domains serving exploits, leading to the possible download & installation of malware.

I thought it would be interesting to know what security people use (and how successful or not!). I'm assuming that giving this info doesn't put security at risk - perhaps someone could say if it does!

I use 1) Firewall inbuilt in router
    2) Sygate firewall is on computer in case of router failure but I turn it off when logged on.
    3) Microsoft firewall turned off
    4) Avast antivirus
    5) Spywareblaster
    6)Prevx Intrusion prevention
    7) Ewido - not full version which has expired & you have to pay for.

Everything seems fine at the moment. (I recently changed set up as I was getting a few viruses and trojans.)

    I use Avira Antivirus.

I've just taken delivery of new DELL laptop with Windows 8.

On PC I'm using MSE. Have read last few pages, but would like latest recommendations for free AV - Avast, Avira or other?

Also, what should I do about Windows Defender?

    Cheers

Just realised Windows Defender is MSE for Windows 8 - so I'll uninstall before installing whatever is recommended
