I'm looking for something light for an old netbook - tbh it's going to be on the web much but would prefer something on it.
I've just installed avira on my desktop but I'm going to get rid of that, the ads are so annoying (found a couple of sites that say how to block them but now i just get a message popping up to say that the permissions are insufficient to run them - which i know as I set them!)
anyway, good, light, free AV anyone?
Avast free and a bit of common sense. I'm on XP.
If you're the only person using it and you don't surf !!!!!!, open unknown email attachments, the usual stuff, you should be okay.0 -

You'll never get a virus or trojan if you express the bare minimum of care ...security is for idiots.....
Seems to me a bit like a person with a nut allergy who says that because he knows everything about what he is eating and has got away without a reaction for years, doesn't see the point in carrying an antidote.
Is he clever, misguided or an idiot?.0 -
i have been looking through the threads about security.has anyone tried sandboxing for your browser.it isolates anything from getting in or out,so wont infect the rest of your computer and files.if you download anyfiles you can keep it sandboxed or if you trust it you can release it to the rest of your computer.i still use an antivirus ,firewall etc .may be of use when you use internet banking.
An Introduction and a Quick Guide to Sandboxie0 -
+1 for Sandboxie.
Forget about which a/v is flavour of the month - Avast is better or worse than Avira, AVG is better than MSE, Kaspersky is better than McAfee and so on - they are all pretty useless at zero-day protection anyway.
Sandboxie properly set up; Malwarebytes, Virus Total or similar to check everything recovered from the sandbox; a light a/v - whichever runs best on your system - and light outbound secure firewall, plus a little common sense and you've pretty much got a watertight combo with no bloat and minimal system slowdown.

dont know if it gets mentioned much but the german institute av test .org (i think it is that) do pretty much continuas testing of A.V and have started doing it for android aswell. they give out awards and you can read up to see which A.V does the best in their testing. very helpful if you are starting from fresh or just wanting to see how good the A.V you use actually is.
i use kaspersky internet security0
