Poor you. I just live in a place with very low levels of crime, though someone had a sheep stolen a few years ago.
  • Security requirements have changed so much since this thread was started. It's interesting to look back.

I stopped using subscription services a few years ago. I now use Microsoft Security Essentials (free, lightweight and efficient). I also use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I see my main point of security as my router now and think it is useless to have any security on client machines if you neglect to configure your network access, especially with so many mobile devices.

I think these days the security that the big players are using (such as our online email providers and shops) is of much bigger concern to us. There is less targeting due to increase email security and more blanket 'hacking' of passwords.

Check your router settings, keep your (free) antivirus updated, make sure your built-in firewall is enabled and choose complicated passwords. It's much safer to write down complex passwords than remember easy ones that can be queried easily by hackers. Oh and don't think that you are safe because you have a Mac:rotfl:.

Remember to have a good firewall too Zonealram is not the best but simple and easy to use, for viruses, nothing will protect you 100% of the time, but simple steps can help (try to avoid autorun for example), don't click on the email that say "You have won £1,000,000 dollars, tesco points etc. Don't click on the email however inviting that says 'insert sexy name here' Hey! I am trying to get back in touch as I lost your contact detail, you can see my picture here... (Just don't do it!!) :)

Always be careful about using pen drives from friends/using said pen drives in public computers etc.

    Hope this helps

Is he clever, misguided or an idiot?.

Maybe keep an aqualung in the boot of your car - after all, 1:100000000000000 people have driven into water and drowned

If you cant be trusted to walk around carrying a sharp pencil then you should install virus protection to prevent you from "installing" a virus on your system (shooting yourself in the foot) - the rest of us just need use a modicum of common sense and not "install" viruses disguised as "dancing coke bottles"
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

As I'd already said previously, many internet user are infected by simply visiting compromised sites - No user interaction needed.

Exploit packs are criminally appealing because victim exploitation is quick and seamless if a vulnerability exists. The victim may not notice anything different in their computer’s behavior post drive-by.

FLipping heck what a load of overkill!!!

Security comes first by being sensible:

    - Don't go onto dodgy sites that attack your computer

    - Don't click on dodgy links (like ones in emails)

    - Don't fall for dodgy online tricks (like the ones telling you have virus's!)

If you are careful you may not get anything on your computer at all.

Half the time 'security' software seems more invasive to me than the virus's . . .

Norton is a good example - install that as its pretty good malware in its own right and it wont let you uninstall it!

Most of us know how to avoid STD's - its fairly simple isn't it?

If you aren't 'promiscuous' online then you avoid being infected dont you?!!??!
I was going to put the name of my plumbing business here so you know what I do should I give out any advice plumbing wise - however apparently I cant do that - go figure!!!!!
New signature - I am a Plumber (I am just not allowed to tell you!)

    Hi

I'm using Linux Mint 15 (Windows 7 failed to get past starting Windows after a clean install) and don't have any anti-virus.

What would constitute a "dodgy" site?

    London Stock Exchange, Autotrader.co.uk, Myvue.com, eBay.co.uk?

    http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/9/3971766/major-websites-hit-with-malware-warning
Several high-profile websites have been affected today by malware notices in Google Chrome, including The San Francisco Chronicle, The Boston Globe, The Verge, DeviantArt, and even Google's own YouTube.

What do the recent compromises of a number of LA Times websites and the blog of hard disk drive manufacturer Seagate have in common?

According to several security researchers, all these sites are hosted on servers running Apache web server software, and have been compromised and equipped with module that is able to insert and rotate malicious iFrames on all pages of websites hosted on these servers.

The iFrames in question usually redirect users to website hosting exploit kits (mostly Blackhole) and they often end up with malware on their computers.

    http://newsroom.cisco.com/release/1133334/Cisco-Annual-Security-Report-Threats-Step-Out-of-the-Shadows
Despite popular assumptions that security risks increase as a person's online activity becomes shadier, findings from Cisco's 2013 Annual Security Report (ASR) reveal that the highest concentration of online security threats do not target pornography, pharmaceutical or gambling sites as much as they do legitimate destinations visited by mass audiences, such as major search engines, retail sites and social media outlets. In fact, Cisco found that online shopping sites are 21 times as likely, and search engines are 27 times as likely, to deliver malicious content than a counterfeit software site. Viewing online advertisements? Advertisements are 182 as times likely to deliver malicious content than pornography.
