hands up all those who have become part of a botnet???
what nobody?
Search the numerous Sirefef/ZeroAccess threads recently then look it up along with clickfraud.
These types of inefctions are often installed by exploiting vulnerabilities - without user interaction other than visiting a compromised site.0 -
Most botnet victims are unaware they're infected - that's the point. Similarly for key loggers.0

I use Avast free and have never had any viruses.0

what are people running now?
I'm looking for something light for an old netbook - tbh it's going to be on the web much but would prefer something on it.
I've just installed avira on my desktop but I'm going to get rid of that, the ads are so annoying (found a couple of sites that say how to block them but now i just get a message popping up to say that the permissions are insufficient to run them - which i know as I set them!)
anyway, good, light, free AV anyone? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If you don't look for "warez" (illegal software) and don't view !!!!!! or visit other risky sites, and don't carelessly open email attachments whose source you don't know...
Microsoft Security Essentials is lightweight and VERY unintrusive. No need for a separate firewall.
The latest review of free AVs I've seen strongly recommended Avira, but I haven't changed from MSE.
Also install Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware (free editions) which are tried and tested on-demand programs for picking up malware that's made it onto your PC. They won't take up resources until you run them, and you may never have to.0 -
I use Comodo, never had a virus and it's free.I have enough money to last me the rest of my life,as long as I die next Tuesday.0

Microsoft Security Essentials. Free, integrates really well into the OS (on PC's at any rate). A slightly stripped down version of their forefront technology. Well worth running. As for running nothing? it's a personal choice.
There are all sorts of malicious bits of code out there and they're not always interested in stealing your details (lots are) but they are interested in you. Not all of them are black hats either. There are quite a few govt sponsored attack vectors.
hope this helps.0 -
I have an edge router with equitably firm ACLs in front of my FreeBSD cartons, and block SSH on that (along with effectively everything additional) from anywhere but trusted internal hosts. SSH with non-standard dock is good.0

... I've never had a virus, or heard of anyone personally having one that they did not install THEMSELVES ...
It came from a reputable architect's office and he played merry hell with the staff member who had been surfing the net on the office computer.0
