Interesting that it's the Windows 7 version that 'failed to make the cut', and the article finishes with "If you're using Windows 8, take these results as a wakeup call".

Yet the same guy on the same site has an article titled "Windows 8 Much More Secure than Windows 7".

    Just sayin'.

OK - I recently updated my Adobe Flash software and now appear to have a smelly McAfee Security Scan Plus piece of software on my machine.
Since I had a pretty painful task of getting rid of McAfee software when I updated my full antivirus I'm curious to know the following:
    1. What does Security Scan Plus do that my antivirus software doesn't (I'm using Trend Micro v 6.0.215)?
    2. Do I need it to support security flaws in Adobe Flash software?
    3. Should I keep it or uninstall it?

    Any advice greatly appreciated
    :)

    1. It's little more than a marketing tool for Mcafee.

    2. You need to patch security flaws in Adobe flash - You don't need Mcafee to do that though. Although not the most targeted this year, exploits are in the wild for Adobe Flash and it is in the top 4 of the Vulnerable applications targeted by malicious users list for Windows users. It was most recently exploited using a Word document containing malicious flash content (.swf).

    3. Mcafee? Dump it.

I think theyre asking if they should keep Trend Micro

  • Thanks Waddler - very helpful as always

Aliernrik - I was asking if I should keep or dump McAfee Security Scan Plus. I quite like Trend Micro (although now appreciate I could have got something for free).

    No problem.

Just to clarify my answer to question 2.

Yes, you do need to patch security flaws in Adobe Flash - but no, you don't need Mcafee SSP to do it.
  • I use Kaspersky IS but also my brain. IS suites can only help to survive but can't protect from everything and anyone.

Is it me or does anyone else find Windows Security Essentials actually very promising?
Not very. Check AV suite comparisons! They are maybe average, no more. Better to choose something more solid.
  • Maybe they work, but not providing security on all levels. Essentially - they luck cloud based support system. Top IS vendors now all are having their clouds.

I currently use Windows Defender but noticed the BT include BT Netprotect Plus (provided by McAfee) with my broadband package. Should I switch to this ?
