....How do I stop any viruses or suchlike from killing my machine?
Thx.
MUTTL
In addition to an a/v install something like ToolWiz Timefreeze (free), Sandboxie (free) or Shadow Defender (paid for).
In the case of Time Freeze and Shadow Defender they create a virtual environment and simply rebooting will return the laptop to it's previous state. If something nasty has got on to your laptop or even if he has accidentally deleted some important files it doesn't matter - everything gets returned to its original state.
There is a useful review here:

Hi Gillor
Thanx for info, I downloaded timefreeze to my desktop, but when I try to run it, it just keeps trying to re-install it?
Any advice?

I'm using Shadow Defender on my desktop and Time Freeze on a spare laptop (and Sandboxie on both).
I have to go out shortly but when I get back I will download Time Freeze to my desktop and see if I can replicate your problem.0 -
Hi MUTTL,
I have just downloaded Toolwiz Time Freeze and run it successfully without any problem.
Just a couple of suggestions:
Uninstall it and do a quick scan with Malwarebytes just in case anything nasty is already lurking on your computer.
Download from File Hippo and if prompted select Save, not Run. Right click on the the application, select Open and then Run to re-install.0 -
I use BitDefender, have used this for two years now and find it does the job perfectly. The year before that i tried panda anti virus which i found ok also. - I try to stay away from the more mainstream versions ie norton/mcafee0

i use malwarebytes and AVG free version and it always does it job on screening harmful websites.
im just a little annoyed sometimes about the sensitivity of malwarebytes to screen websites but all in all the 2 is perfect for my laptop's security.
