Windows 7 Account Control (whatever it's called) will tell you if anything's trying to install so you don't need anything else. MSE integrates well with Windows firewall and is the least intrusive AV that I know of. I would recommend that - keeps it simple, and it works too.0

I use AVG Internet Security Paid Version, I am very Happy with it.0

Thanks, I'm not looking for something to tell me when something is being installed. I'm looking for something that tells me when something is trying to add itself to start up.Sigless0 -
Just upgraded my desktop to windows 7 (late I know, but it was running great so I saw no need to change - till it crashed, so upgraded).
Should I stick with avast or go with MSE?
I'd be using avast, I know it was discontinued long ago. but I liked the simplicity. If something tried to connect to the net or connect top my pc. It popped up, told me and I said yes or no.
Any other firewalls nice and simple like avast?
I installed comodo, but it seems to just let whatever it wants connect without asking me.
Also, I had a start up monitor that would pop up and tell me if anything tried to add itself to start up. Not compatible with windows 7, anything similar?
personally I would stick with Avast; as for firewall I just use the win 7 firewall itself ; spybot (free ) has the teatimer that kicks in when startup entries are added -- personally I've always found it really annoying but it's an available option .BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? As above, Teatimer - but I wouldn't use it myself. I've seen plenty of infected systems with teatimer active.
I imagine a more fancy firewall than the Windows firewall would do it as well.
You could always try Winpatrol, but only the full/paid version allows real-time monitoring.
Personally I just manually check every so often using HJT or autoruns.0 -

He wants to be alerted when a program sets itself to run when Windows boots up.
There are far more start locations than just the "Startup" folder in the Start Menu.
For some malware a mere alert won't help, as it's easy for malware force the computer to restart after adding the Run or Runonce keys.0 -
Another vote for Eset Nod32.
I've used Avast for years, but last week started having problems. Something disabled my XP welcome screen and I couldn't change the settings, the system said it was related to xtgina.dll
When submitted to Virustotal yesterday, only Norton and Nod32 recognized it was infected. I installed Nod32 trial version and it removed the file immediately. The system is back to normal and seems faster.0 -
I'm proud to say that I'm using Mc Afee...they alert me right away if the site is incapacitated or contains malicious softwares...0

Win7 fully patched, AVG, and two firewalls (home router and an iptables enabled linux box) Though for real security? Bank in virtual machines and watch out for Qubes OS coming out soon I think? Nothing like a nice little sand baoxBored? Find something to do for the family? stuckinthehouse.co.uk0
