  • Now that OmniOutliner is going to be released for iPad today, I am going to go for it, and consider also getting it for Mac as well, when version 4 is released. Now my only problem is that I am not sure if I will need it for anything. I am already managing my projects in Omnifocus, and my finances in YNAB, so I find it hard to find a use for this program. If I was a student, I guess OmniOutliner for iPad could be very good for taking notes, however I am not student either.. Perhaps I could use this for brainstorming..So just for interest, I would like to hear from OmniOutliner users what do you use it for? Perhaps it will give me a inspiration onto what I could use it for as well..

  • I have tried them all, and found Kapersky to be the best, very user friendly and catches all the nastys i use a blocker also.

Avg i downloaded once was terrible imo, there are newer versions out and i heard they have improved there software.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 and Malwarebytes.

Also I use non-admin accounts for surfing the internet.

I can vouch for eset smart security - in my job i do alot of testing, as in trying get through firewalls and avoid av's and Eset on windows and the mac comes out best most of the time - Kaspersky comes a close second :)
The only real security that a man can have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience and ability.

I am a certified IT tech, and in my job I've come across a wide range of anti virus programs. When it comes to AV protection, it is true that the best of them aren't free. However, some non-free ones out there are not as good as some of the free ones!

For a free AV, I install MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) on a client's PC. I find this to be reasonable at picking up viruses, not a big hog on system resources and the best thing (well, second best thing as the best thing is that it's free), is that it doesn't bug you all the time to cough up a load of money for the paid version (AVG is a real pain for this and when it comes to protecting your PC, it's not really good at that anyway). Even when people have the likes of McAfee and (in worst cases Webroot) on their machines, with paid subscriptions for several more months, I still recommend removing those and replacing them with MSE or my recommended paid-for AV.

For a paid-for malware protection product, you can't get better than ESET NOD32 Antivirus or Smart Security (if you want a firewall, etc. too). ESET has the best protection for known and 'in the wild' (unknown) viruses, the lowest number of false positives, the lowest system resource usage (making it the fastest) out of all of it's competitors, and has the most VB100 awards to back that claim up.

Personally, I have been using ESET NOD32 Antivirus for years. I use the built in windows firewall and a hardware router with a built in firewall. Throughout this time, my PCs have never been infected by viruses - including the common malware that the likes of AVG, McAfee, Norton, etc. let through.

If you have Windows Vista or 7, I would recommend not turning User Account Control (UAC) off. Although it may seem like a pain at times, it can save your computer from bad programs being installed without your permission.

For malware clean up (when cleaning up other people's PCs), I use Combofix (very good, but don't use this unless you know what you're doing or have been told to run it) and Malwarebytes Anti Malware (MBAM). I also leave MBAM on the clients PCs for them to run scans themselves when needed. Another tool I've heard great review for is SuperAntiSpyware (SAS), but I've not actually used it myself).

    *** Money saving tip ***
Amazon currently have a 1 Year, 3 User license box of ESET Smart Security for £21.80. This is a great price and even my with reseller discount, I can't buy it at this price direct from ESET myself! Go to Amazon and use their product code B003FZBWKY in the search box.

I thought it would be interesting to know what security people use (and how successful or not!). I'm assuming that giving this info doesn't put security at risk - perhaps someone could say if it does!

I use 1) Firewall inbuilt in router
    2) Sygate firewall is on computer in case of router failure but I turn it off when logged on.
    3) Microsoft firewall turned off
    4) Avast antivirus
    5) Spywareblaster
    6)Prevx Intrusion prevention
    7) Ewido - not full version which has expired & you have to pay for.

Everything seems fine at the moment. (I recently changed set up as I was getting a few viruses and trojans.)

Just upgraded my desktop to windows 7 (late I know, but it was running great so I saw no need to change - till it crashed, so upgraded).

Should I stick with avast or go with MSE?

I'd be using avast, I know it was discontinued long ago. but I liked the simplicity. If something tried to connect to the net or connect top my pc. It popped up, told me and I said yes or no.

Any other firewalls nice and simple like avast?

I installed comodo, but it seems to just let whatever it wants connect without asking me.

Also, I had a start up monitor that would pop up and tell me if anything tried to add itself to start up. Not compatible with windows 7, anything similar?
