So if you last used it 8 years ago what do you know about what it is like now?
    Answer - nothing.

Well like many people on this forum I prefer free overall :p

So I'm actually more savvy than to waste money on a paid solution when free is just as good, if not better !

Avast and AVG are excellent free solutions IMHO !

You know, I'd be interested to scour this forum and have a look at all the "I have a virus/think I have a virus/have something gone wrong that sounds like a virus" thread, and see what security people use. Maybe one day when I'm really bored, I will. Nothing like real-life data to compare!

  • I'm using ESET NOD32 Anti-virus along with Windows Firewall. I also use CCleaner every now and then to clear unnecessary junk from the Hard Drive. Primarily got ESET because of it doesn't use up much CPU Power and RAM, but it is very vigilant, aware and secure! :D

I've never tried Eset, but I'm tempted for the sole reason that their UK head office is 5 minutes walk from my house. It certainly seems to come out well in the tests...but I have another two unused copies of Norton 360, so I'm securitied up until about 2014!

  • I run Apple Mac OS X and here is what I use for security software:

ClamXav - Free Anti-virus software. Great software, and has only ever found a virus in Microsoft files which where located on a Visualised PC image.
LittleSnitch - Paid for application/firewall which monitors all communication to and from your Mac, including Virtual PC's running in Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Great for stopping call home requests.

    That's it !

Hi, Im after some advice please. I was running microsoft security essentials and avast on my lappy. Now wether coincidence or not, I ran scans with both a few weeks back, nothing found, I then had lots of updates done by microsoft when switching off which were taking ages. Then I noticed that microsoft security had been deleted from my lappy. I ran scan again with avast, and nothing, so tried to re-install MSE, but got error code, which basically they said meant it couldnt download with any other sercurity programs being on my lappy. Now a friend told me to download and run Malwarebytes, which I did and it found nothing. Pretty sure this is now trying to compete with avast as it keeps popping up its blocked avast from doing stuff.
My question is, should I delete Avast and then try and re-install MSE, should I run avast with the malware and not bother with MSE, or should I delete them all and someone suggest a better plan?
I dont have any problems with my lappy, it seems to be running fine, other than the battery has stopped warning me its getting low, but thats been doing that for ages. Sorry if I dont sound in the know, Im not, hope someone can help me. Thanks.

Best to only run "antivirus" at a time, i.e. either Avast or MSE, but not both. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware works fine with both, although Avast had problems with it in the past.

What do you mean it's saying it's blocked Avast from doing stuff?

Post a Hijackthis log and make a new thread, and we can have a look at what's running if you want (http://www.users.on.net/~russ/hjt/).

As both MSE & Avast are antivirus solutions you should have only one installed. Choose either MSE or Avast, but not both together. Running multiple antiviruses can cause problems; anything from slowdowns and a degradation of overall performance & false positives as the programs detect each others components, to program/application & system crashes.

    Avast
Should I remove other anti-virus programs (Norton Antivirus, McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky Antivirus etc.) before installing avast!?

    Answer
Yes. Using two or more antivirus programs can cause problems and the operating system may become unstable. For many products there is uninstall utility available on vendor's website.

    Microsoft
If you use more than one antivirus or antispyware program at the same time, your computer may experience decreased performance, become unstable, or restart unexpectedly. Before you install Microsoft Security Essentials, or to resolve many issues with Security Essentials, including installation issues, you must first completely remove any Internet security programs from your computer as described in this topic.

I have used the following combination (not had a virus or other in 20 years) on all laptops I look after:

    1. MSE
    2. Non Admin account.

    Combined with:

    a) not saving any finance operations details (Ids. & pwds) in browsers (and get them to clear everything on shutdown) and always type in the URL.

    b) low internet exposure on social sites,

    c) NEVER open a link in an email - go to the site independantly if required.

    d) regularly updates.

    Thanks for your time.
