    +1 Avast .

My Sony laptop recently developed a fault (caused by me). My SIL took it to work and got one of their IT people to have a look. He fixed it but I am puzzled by some of the programs it now has on it. These are:

AVAST4 free edition which I had before it went wrong.

AVG10 " " the boss of a local computer fixing co said it was the only one he used - full
    version of course.

McAfee " " which I am about to get rid of.

Question - would you keep both AVG and AVAST? I thought the latter was excellent but AVG has such a good name.

The laptop has been returned in a "factory" condition so the addition of extra programmes has puzzled me but I am so pleased it is fixed.

Ideally you should only be running one antivirus program, which one you choose is personal preference. I prefer Avast over AVG as it allows you to do a boottime scan, its updated more often. Incidentally Avast is now on version 6 (its still free) and the layout is now much more user-friendly!

If you run more than one antivirus at the same time, your computer will slow down because of double scaning the files, and they have been known to delete one anothers virus definition files :)

Using Avast 6, with routers inbuilt firewall and Windows firewall. Periodically run Superantispyware, malwarebytes and spybot. Windows 7 fully updated, Ccleaner run, and a registry checking tool from eusing.
Monthly backups are made of my 2TB hardrive usuing Acronis True Image to an external drive (this takes quite the time on my lowly core 2 duo processor - approx 10 hours on max compression!). Frequency can be higher if theres a lot of changed data on the computer

Avira Premium Security Suit 2009, Note post versions past 2009 are considerably WHACK. Ofton acquire 3 free month license keys through Avira's promotional page.. They run all year round in different regions of the world for short periods of time but after the 3 month license has expired the next promotion has surfaced. It's lite on resources and seems like an all round good Anti-virus suit. Nice features very modest not over sold, Classic and simple most off all does it job.

Also I use Acronis and VMWare software.. So frequent re-installments occure regulary loading a backed up copy of my C:/ drive., Programs and software with all my personal configurations, tweaks and what have yah in tat.

Works great for me. To me it looks like people are far over protective with muiltiple Anti-viruses etc..

I'm now fairly well convinced now that NO free version of antivirus software is good enough to protect you from malware if you're using XP and Internet Explorer.

Use paid version Kaspersky or similar.

I use XP with IE8 and MSE with other free security apps & I don't have problems with malware. IE is more secure now in comparison to earlier versions.

A lot of browser exploits are targeted at the browser plugins rather than the browser itself - Adobe, Java, Quicktime etc, so the browser being used is sometimes irrelevent.

How many times do you see threads where people ask how to turn of "annoying" security features?

Don't particularly see such questions posed here - normally people just want to know how to deal with the various benign or malign popups they see.

For me Avast is tried and trusted -- never had an issue with it  Clearly, some people here are having issues with it -- after the install -- and are opting for avg instead. It's prob. a close call and depends on what u trust -- esp. long-term. For me , Avast just gets better and better .
