Macs are far from secure. They just don't get attacked as much.
The reason why Windows gets so many viruses targeting it is not because it's less secure - in fact, due to all the security patching when vulnerabilities are found, it's one of the more secure OS's out there. The reason it gets targeted the most is due to the fact it's got the largest user base and therefore more of a chance to get the right platform for the virus to spread. You will find that as Apple gets more popular (because it's trendy and shiny), then people will start to target that more and because Apple user generally think that their computers are secure, they are actually less vigilant and more prone to clicking on that dodgy link, which sooner or later will contain malware targeted at Macs and much crying will ensue.
Do yourself a favour and get some AV protection. There is even a version of ESET NOD32/Smart Security which is for Macs.0 -
Hi - I have Norton 360 which seems to work well, the only problem I have is regarding the subscription renewal. It appears it was set up to auto renew when first installed. My renewal is due on 15 October and I've received an email saying my card will be auto debited with £56.51 on 30 September - however I see that Norton's website is currently offering a 1 year subscription on special offer at £41.99 for the same product. Thought I'd try and see why I'm being charged a higher rate but they are difficult to get hold of - customer service online seems to revolve around 'Nathan' who is a virtual character. Someone else I know has said it's best not to be set up for auto-renewal as you can usually get Norton on even cheaper offers at around £24.99 in places like PC World so it- so how does that work!!0

I use Virgin Media's supplied Anti-Virus. They claim it's worth £59.99 and it's obviously free for Virgin customers, and to be fair it's pretty decent!Competition Stats:

Only three machines use Windows XP SP3, one of which never uses a browser, and another only uses a VPN Link when online. Not sure what AV package my sons netbook is running.
I use a MacBook Pro, for almost three years without any AV software, and I have never had a problem, which is somewhat unlikely because its based on a variant of FreeBSD (a branch of Linux). There's very few written for OSX, and because you have to deliberately infect your machine due to the security of the machine, and even if one machine is deliberately infected, the virus cannot propagate.
My other machines all use various flavours of Linux, have you ever tried to find an Anti-Virus product for Linux? The only one's that are available for Linux are AV Tools designed to check data received from Windows machines, to remove Windows viruses so that Linux Users don't spread the Windows virus to other Windows Users, these 'infections' remain inert on Linux machines so its only Linux Users being friendly to those hords of Windows Users. These AV Tools are distributed to Linux Users for free.
If you're looking to save money, then run Linux.0 -
