  • I absolutely hate free avg, so many viruses pass through it and it doesnt pick them up on scan. Free avast is much better. Norton is good but its a huge application and slows the machine, plus its pretty expensive after awhile.

For people who have used the same anti-virus for years and haven't experienced many other ones, I would suggest giving ESET NOD32 or Smart Security a go.

Eset NOD32 is great, but there is a rogue Eset out there at the moment, so make sure you know the website you're downloading it from!

I use Kaspersky 2012 at home, and Microsoft Forefront (Business class MSE) at work. I also like Microsoft Security Essentials, it's one of the best free ones out there. Several of my PC obsessed friends (programmers, PC magazine columnists, server support technicians etc) are also MSE fans.

We let the grandchildren loose on our computers. Maybe it's good that they become familiar with them from an early age. The computers are situated where they can be seen all the time by adults and are hard-wired to the router, so no hiding away.

They tend to only use the main computer so, just before being visited, I update the computer's disk image. With this done, they can use the computer and go to their favourite sites without worry. The browser is run sandboxed as a precaution against picking up drive-by malware. It hasn't happened yet but they could even mess the computer up completely and all that would need doing is to restore the computer from the disk image. This would also be the case if they had been unfortunate enough to pick up any malware by using the browser outside of Sandboxie.

One advantage of a disk image is that it gives peace of mind. The grandchildren can learn about the ins and outs of computers in our house and I can rest easy in the knowledge that if something bad does happen, there is a quick way back.

Can anyone give me any idea why I suddenly have to renew my Kaspersky license after having the free version for years? I just started the computer and got a message saying it was due to expire soon, but I can't find anywhere to renew the free one, only at £24.95 a year. Has the freebie come to an end does anyone know?
Oh dear, here we go again.

I use the free AVG software, never had a problem with it and always seems on the ball in terms of threats to the computer. Definitely worth checking out if you want cheap and reliable computer security!

If this is Barclays banking free licence

    How to renew

If you accepted the Kaspersky Internet Security or Kaspersky Mobile Security offer last year and your activation code is coming up for renewal, you will be able to request a new 12-month activation code via the Kaspersky Offer link on your At a Glance page in Online Banking. Just follow the renewal process instructions.

Currently using Outpost security suite pro 7.5, which I got free from Giveaway of the day.

Thinking of going back to avast though, although I know its supposed to be good. My pc seems to be slower since installing.
