  • I'vetried several free ones over the years but wasn't really satisfied with them. For me it's a rare case of you get what you pay for... I'm with "Bullguard" at the moment, because their package which allows me to save money over several machines suits me. Basically, I work in editing & have to cover 4 PCs and 2 laptops - so it's probably slightly different for me. My advice is always to shop around - but I find there's a cost implication if you want real peace of mind.

There's no such thing as complete peace of mind.

There's complacency; something I was previously guilty of, until about a week ago, when a piece of malware steamed into my computer and the well-known, paid-for software failed to stop it. The malware then did a very thorough job of disabling all the security software on the machine as soon as it was used, and it also re-directed any Google searches.

A call to my ISP and two hours fiddling at their end achieved a nil result. A call to the security software company brought an offer of remote help for an extra charge of $59. Great, so the folks who failed to protect me wanted more for being carp! I told them where to stick their 'assistance.' ;)

Fortunately, a company whose product was free, Malwarebytes, took their position more seriously and offered immediate and rapid help by email. Following their analysis of the logs, I was able to regain control of the computer and, after a lot of further work, dig out all the nasties.....or at least I think I have, hence what I said above.

I've reinstalled all the security software I had before, with the exception of the paid-for suite, which has gone, permanently. In it's place I'm running AVG with a Comodo firewall, sandboxed!

As for the 'puter itself, it's running better without some of the junk I had on it, thanks to finding Revo uninstaller during the tidy-up phase.:)

But will I ever trust it to do on-line banking again? Ah, there's the rub.....

I dont use any apart from the limited protection afforded by my O2 ADSL box.

    I run Linux latest Ubuntu.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    First believe in yourself
Second, move forward after every failure.
Third, use your strengths and work out your weaknesses.
Fourth, never forget the people who helped you along the way. Be grateful.:rotfl:

That's a sorry tale Davesnave and I sympathise. The trouble is that any AV program can have a detection failure rate. It's understandable that a person experiencing a failure with an AV program will ditch it and go to another.

I'm a great fan of sandboxing and use the standalone program called 'Sandboxie' for the purpose. With this in place, an AV Program tends to become a secondary layer of security rather than the primary one. Sandboxie doesn't trust anything and it all stays inside an isolated area (the sandbox) where it can do no harm. My browser always runs sandboxed. I also open e-mail attachments inside the sandbox. Nothing is invincible I suppose but I feel a lot safer when using Sandboxie.

That's why I didn't name it. However, as the security suite came as part of a package deal, I have since looked at my usage and downgraded the package, saving a decent amount of money too! :D

Wise move - I run Avira and Comodo.

For any sites (like online banking) that require entry of security information, you should be using Trusteer Rapport, which automatically creates a secure channel between your PC and the remote site. It's free, and most banks have a web page you can download it from, or you can get it from the Trusteer site (above). My bank's home-banking web page auto-pesters you to install it!

Some frequent and respected posters on this forum do not like Rapport.

    Perhaps they can explain why?
