I was using Avast for a couple of years without a problem, but have now ditched it in favour of AVG. Reason? Because, now having FTTC broadband, the 'network' and 'web' shields were causing download speeds to fall down to around 10Mbps +/- 2Mbps, from 20Mbps on wireless 'b'. Now getting the full flow again. I Googled and found some others reporting slow downs too.

Just something to be wary of, I had no issues when on Max adsl.

you can disable all of avast's shields individually......might have been better to do that than go for avg.....
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • Without having to read through all this hugely long thread, I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction please.

I previously had AVG free on my system, which was updated to the 2012 version when I had my computer in for repair a little while ago.

I recently decided to upgrade to Windows 7, at which point everything was wiped from the system and I am at starting point again, with a trial Norton anti virus which I would like to ditch when I'm able.

I have been on one or two AVG sites, but am a little confused as to which to download, as it keeps coming up with "Trial Version" which I assume will be for a month and then have the option to pay. I would prefer to go with a really good freebie, but need some guidance.

Thats where you lot come in. If anyone could give me advice please ... ?

There was a review this month in Computer Shopper (I think - read it in Smiths waiting for my train!) and AVG came out top as the "free" Antivirus software. This link appears to give you a full free version

That said, I've been using Avast for a couple of years, and install it on all my familys laptops for them to keep them safe and I've never had a problem with it, or an infected PC. I like that it's light weight, easy to configure and doesn't seem to give PC's a bit performance hit like some other AV software (Cough Macafee Cough).

Ditch Norton as soon as you've got a suitable replacement lined up.

How can this be, when in their own advertisements they claim not to be able to protect you when 'Sharing and downloading files to your PC' with the Free version?

    Hi People, just joined

I repair Computers for a living and tend to put the free version of AVG on computers that I get in here although I use Kaspersky myself on my Windows laptop.

What AV software doesn't do very well is to protect users from thereselves... Some do go aimlessly clicking on this and that. Some, I'm afraid to say, visit some rather unsavoury sites and have only themselves to blame when they catch something nasty :)

  • Many thanks for your responses - I do wish to use my computer for on-line banking, and therefore want something that is going to be effective from that point of view.

Would you still recommend AVG free?

I use it and I have no worries that it's somehow 'worse' than the paid-for suite I previously used. I also have Trusteer Rapport, which I use additionally for banking sites, but some folks on here don't like it, claiming it slows their computer etc. :)

Whatever one uses, someone's going to find fault with it, just like a recent poster has seen it necessary to be judgemental about other people's perceived surfing habits. That's life. ;)

Well, when I log on to my building society site I use a rather different and hoopefully very secure method but you may well find that it's a pain.

I use a live linux CD

    Let me explain..

Linux is an alternative operating system that can run directly from the CD. In my case I use a variation called Ubuntu (Google it)

My PC is set to try and boot from the CD/DVD first so when i reboot with the CD in the drive, it loads the operating system into the PC's onboard memory without affecting the files on the hard drive.

I then log on to my building society, do my stuff, and then reboot into my normal operating system as usual.

That way, any cookies or nasties that may have been picked up simply disappear and there are no traces of passwords on my computer..

    Simples

That's how I discovered the Network and Web shields were causing the slow down. Thought what's the point if I was having to turn off protection. I'm assuming AVG has its own version of network and web protection built in.

Or, it just lets everything through. :D
