I use Avast, plus have Windows firewall turned on. In Internet Options the security level is set at Med-High.

I've just had a problem with the 'XP Security 2012' virus which I think I've now resolved but it leads me to think my security isn't good enough. I do visit a lot of websites because I enter lots of competitions online.

Can anyone tell me if I should be running anything else please?
Although those scareware FakeAV seems to be dropping off a little, they can still get past a lot of AV protection as they change so often.

The best way to protect against this is to limit what the code can do once it gets on your machine (and assume that it will get on there). Options are:

If you are using XP, make your users account a non-administrator account. If using Vista or Win 7, keep UAC turned on.

Consider a script-blocking addin to your browser (NoScript for Firefox and ScriptNo for google).

Run your browser in a sandbox (Sandboxie or Bufferzone).
  • I use AVG scanner with the built in windows firewall..

Check for vulnerable programs & applications that can be exploited to help force download/install this & other malware (EG: Browser plug-ins such as Java, Adobe Flash & Reader etc...)

  • I use Panda antivirus. It's cloud based so takes very little resources. It's a lovely non complicated non intrusive package.

I also use a combination of skybot search and destroy, SUPER antispyware (both freeware) for spyware and Malwarebytes' anti-malware (again freeware). I also use Peerblock as I use torrents a lot.

I settled on Kaspersky Pure last year after many issues with other bought and free issues of other suppliers, managed to get it for £20 3pc/1 year. Most importantly for me has data encription for banking etc.
No issues all year. Runs out shortly, will definately go the same way again.:T:T

A few months back my computer developed a fault. I usually ask my SIL to fix it but he couldn't and told me he was taking it to an IT bloke at work.

It was fixed in a couple of days but I have found that it now has some programmes I have not heard of before. He has installed AVG and I assume it is the free version as there is no Anti Virus with it. Can someone advise me about the best Anti Virus to install?

The Microsoft firewall in now installed. Should I get rid of it?

By he way, my whizz kid grandson is doing higher maths at M/c Uni and he uses AVG which he regads highly.

    The firewalls fine.
AVG is 'ok' but its not what I would recommend

I have Avira but I also browse through sandboxie - brilliant!
  • I'm boring - I just use free AVG and run Malwarebytes weekly to give a bit of extra protection. Both of these are free downloads.
