it's that time of year when I usually renew my Norton licences.

My online banking service offers "Rapport" by Trusteer as a free download. Anyone heard of this and what does it do?
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.

Its own web site will tell you that well enough. Using the search facility here will also work, but may confuse, due to individual disagreements. The banks think it's worth having. Basically, it stops malicious software from stealing data during transactions.

For clarity, I'd say that it's not an anti-virus or malware defence system in itself, so it won't replace Norton, should you wish to keep paying, or any other security software suite, paid-for or free.

Or, it just lets everything through. :D
Probably depends where you go.. :) Been using the internet for over 10yrs, used AVG, MSE, Avast, in no particular order, and so far have been virus free. Touch wood! (knocks head)

Comodo Internet Security Premium (free don't have to pay for these no limitations either!)

As another scanner though Microsoft Security Essentials that I do not use for a resident scanner but for when I want to scan my whole computer after running Comodo.

Comodo DNS service setup through my own custom built router (basically an old PC running Snort IDS/IPS for what is essentially a customised router operating system based on FreeBSD *nix)

For my Linux Server though for the more technical work, I use ClamAV and use that for my Linux mail service, host my own email services, but only for clients aswell, that's all no one else, can't afford the connection fee's for doing that and having to have a broadband licence for this, would just about kill my finances.

I like Comodo's firewall as it does not take up too much processing power, it's not a software based firewall it's what's called a Kernel based firewall, it locks itself into the Operating System so when someone launches an attack at say the OS, before it gets to the actual OS, some hackers try and use this power to get through to your system, but having the firewall locked into that, then this prevents any real attacks occurring, allot of say ones like Zone Alarm are behind the OS and work on top of the OS. Comodo doesn't.
Doing some indepth analysis of my outgoings it's a real eye opener!

I find if I keep paying by card and keeping the receipts insisting that I have them from the shop, then itemising them when I get home on excel makes my life a whooole lot easier!
  • I use Avast Free anti-virus on all my PC's & laptops, thats plenty enough protection for me along with Windows firewall + Windows Defender.
  • I only got ESET Nod32 anti virus for security and my firewall is on. Im a new user of a Pc and I don't have any idea on other things that can help secure my pc. I hope someone can help me what do I need to do.

I'm confused by how many different things people use at one time. I'm in the process of cleaning up my computer that has all sorts left on it from my ex. I'm planning to follow the other thread on speeding up my PC. In the interim, I did notice that I have an awful lot of virus protectors and spyware installed. I was planning on unistalling them all except one of each. Is this adequate? I currently actively use Microsoft Security Essentials. Spy ware, I'm not too sure unless it's happening in the background. I'm on a big learning curve here!!

If you post what you have, I'm sure someone here will tell you what the essentials are, and what might be worth keeping.

Some programs are active and run continously in the background, while others use significant resources only when they are being run, so destroying the latter won't necessarily give you a faster PC.
  • I use Avast, plus have Windows firewall turned on. In Internet Options the security level is set at Med-High.

I've just had a problem with the 'XP Security 2012' virus which I think I've now resolved but it leads me to think my security isn't good enough. I do visit a lot of websites because I enter lots of competitions online.

Can anyone tell me if I should be running anything else please?

    Thanks in advance.
